Today sucks, when it is hard to breath cause the wind goes right down your throat, it means finals should be canceled!

Yesterday the wind was worse, I'd have to say -40° F

i never thought of NYC as a warm place to live, but i guess it is. last night on the news the weather guy said it has been about 8degrees below normal this month, but it still isn't that bad.

although, today the wind was WICKED, it blew the siding off a building on my way to work

before today it was 70 degrees F here
small price to pay for the 110 degree F summers

bay area has been perfect, i have only needed a jacket when it is raining to keep me dry. it just doesnt get that cold here.

I live in Wisconsin. Cold and boring. I win.

Burning Man

I know next year's festival is a long way off, but I'm working on my plans to go already. I was just wondering if anyone's been in the past, is planning to go in the future, or has any other random thoughts/stories about Burning Man.

My plans, by the way, include a 35,000 watt sound system and some of the biggest DJs on the West Coast. Still gotta work on the whole shelter angle, though.

I remember renots went when he was a fair newbie on this board...

I think you'll be disappointed. From what I've heard (from Renots and others who've been), Burning man is more of an LSD kinda thing and less an Ecstacy kinda thing. People will be stumbling around aimlessly and checking out the art displays and tribal drum gatherings, not dancing to techno. Maybe you'll attract some of the frat-boys and yuppies there trying in vain to understand the experience or just gawking at the hippies, but who wants to attract them? I think you'd do better to save all that ammunition for a better venue.

Or maybe I'm completely off base here. Renots has the first hand experience, so I'll defer my opinions to any advice he may have for you.

Probably. Like I said, it's still in the planning phase, so I'm not sure what the line-up/timing is going to be like. I'm working with two guys who work at JK sound, which, for those of you who don't go to concerts or parties in the Bay Area, is one of the biggest sound rental companies in CA. So we're just dragging a monstrous sound system out into the desert, and we've been talking to every DJ we can find to just find out if they're interested. Burning Man is nothing like a "typical rave" but is still very cool. Its like a mix between a rave and a greatful dead concert(more hippies and LSD). Remember its only as cool as you make it so, participate and open your mind to different things.

Oh, yeah BRING A COUPLE OF CAMERAS, the stuff you see there is sooo cool.

I hear ya. We're not trying to make it a rave, just share what we love to do with anybody who cares to listen. And I plan on checking out what everybody else is up to while I'm there. It should be quite an experience.

Actually yes and no stylee-while pictures of South africa are lovely to look at, the actual country is a mess-with political uprisings,crime,and a bad economy. The whites who once ruled S.A are now in the minority as far as getting any kind of profitable work over the black and indian residents of the country. We used to travel alot and when I was a kid..due to my fathers job I had been there 4 times.My husband and I had opportunity also to travel there due to his job 5 or 6 times ...We stayed there for 3 months once and trust me-I would rather walk down any street in harlem wearing jewels and furs-While capetown is lovely -it is advised that if you are not familiar with ANY area of south africa and especially if you are a tourist that you do not go out at night without someone who knows the way around-hijackings are frequent and some of the locals are so nasty they will cut your feet off just to steal your shoes..the thieves at this point are really into stealing copper wiring..and will do just about anything to get it..the rape stats are higher than almost any other country in the world and the aids stats are SKY HIGH..while like any other big cities in this world there are those fat cats with bulging wallets-and its true that more than 50 percent of south african residents have maids,housekeepers and gardners-there are numerous pods of people who barely have food to feed themselves. Nice to visit-not nice to live...
ps..while Johannesburg is treacherous..capetown is very geared towards visitors-Places like Durban and Pietermaritzburg are rising metropolises..FILLED with computer related jobs.I must say though-the friends I made while I did stay there are lovely people-just like any you might find in JoeQ Neighborhood and we still keep in contact which is how I get all this USA bashing type emails..they for once are happy to be out of the spotlight of having a bad governmental situation.

Who cares if we are laughing stocks to the rest of the world. We are far from being a perfect nation and events like this will help us improve. I personally think that they should count all the votes even though I didn't vote for either one of them. One thing I think is hilarious is when they interview some idiot on the street who repeats everything he has heard on the news from other people, except he's such a basket case that he screws it all up. For instance the other day I heard this one toothless bastard talk about "They need to end the election, because we are looking like some third world nation like Russia or Alaska!" Dutch by ancestry-but under rule of the Crown..I think it still may be- One of the "home" languages is Afrikaans-of which I am fluent..it's origins are definately dutch and hasn't strayed too much from the original Dutch that it was derived. Unfortunately the Afrikaaners are looked down on by alot of South Africans as being 'peasants'...it's sad.

OK..So we trudged off into the woods to chop down our numerous christmas trees-(which were all frozen solid,trunks buried in two feet of snow)..chop them down-box them off to fit into the damn stands..get them in the house and now that they are in the house they smell like BUCK LURE! (doe piss for anyone that doesn't know what buck lure is..)Lights and ornaments are great-but when your house starts smelling like the backwoods ****ter instead of a carolina pine forest what are ya supposed to do! Lord help me I swear this is the LAST time for real trees....

don't they have any of those christmas tree places on the side of the highway/ police station/ firehouse/ gas station by you?

I hate all the X-Mas tree vendors on the streets of my neighbohood in Manhattan . . . like it's not already hard enough to walk around on a sidewalk with a ton of people and half-filled with bodegas and fruit stands from markets, now we have to deal with a ton of X-Mas trees. At least we don't have to deal with a million tourists here. I was on 57th street the other night and couldn't walk without stepping on a tourist. I swear, they're like a plague of locusts! I wanted to go on a tourist killing spree just pushing as many of them as possible into the traffic on 5th Avenue . . . hehe

i work in manhatten too

but my office is all the freak way downtown, literally at the entrance to the holland tunnel. so i don't really see too many holiday tourist/ shoppers moseying around. but last year when i worked uptown a bit i had to deal with 34th street everyday. Nightmare on 34th Street is what the movie should be called!

I'd read otherwise. I read (and you didn't know? You're supposed to believe everything you read!) that there was a correllation, albeit not a strong one, between schlong length and the distance between the tip of the index finger and the crook of the hand/thumb joint.

Sending money is fast. I think the recipient gets it pretty much instantaneously. But withdrawing takes longer. Let's say someone sent you money and you want to withdraw that amount into your bank account. That takes 3-4 days. asking for it as a check takes much longer like a week or so.

Why don't we just have an election. Whoever wins, wins! The loser should just shut up and go home.
What kind of President would we have if he won the presidency in a court room instead of an election? In a court it comes down to one vote, the judge's. How sad we've been wasting all this money on elections when we could have just had the President selected by a state judge. This would set a very bad precedent. It's just shy of asking the state church to select our new king.
We can not allow an elite rulling minority (the judicial branch) the power to dictate who our leaders are. That is for the electorate to decide at the direction of the people. This is a lot more serious than most people understand it to be. The only verdict from the Florida courts should be "I'm sorry Mr. Gore but the courts can not overturn the will of the people of the United States of America".
If the methods of the election were questionable then they need to be addresses. Any questions about how things need to be handled should be resolved in the courts for the next election. Haste in attempting to resolve complicated issues will result in errors that will be more difficult to fix than if it was done properly in the first place.

I voted for Nader if anyone wants to know my bias.

While I agree that ruling is nothing short of bizarre, also weird is the dismissal of those other two cases, which seemed, to me, to have a lot more substance. Since the ballots themselves are well-formed and accurate (since absentee ballots are applied for they can be traced back to the applying voter to ensure accuracy), I think they should be counted. Its a shame that life was made easier for Republican voters to get a hold of absentee ballots, and those officials who were privy to these actions should be prosecuted. I don't think, however, that this constitutes voter fraud. Democratic voters were not prevented from applying, nor was there any evidence that there was any fraud involved with the counting or collecting of ballots. The ballots are not false or tampered with, and they express the will of the people who filled them out. I don't think they can be lumped in with those undervoted ballots in Miami-Dade or Leon County, which are not well-formed ballots and will most likely end up expressing the will of whoever analyzes it.

That despite that story I posted yesterday, re: Republican officials taking ballots, unsupervised, into rooms to correct them?
I'm not alleging anything, mind you. I just recognize the potential for tampering here. At the same time, throwing them out entirely seems like an even worse option; the cure is far worse than the symptoms, I suppose.

I tend to agree with all of the court decisions today. The issue of the absentee ballots WAS over the applications for an absentee ballot . . . not the ballots themselves . . . and while in Florida it is considered a PRIVILEGE to vote absentee and it is the DUTY of the voters to make sure that their ballots are completely and accurately filled out, it is "draconian" to use the term floating all over the news to throw out a bunch of ballots that, while having been illegally applied for, DO express the will of those who submitted them - and in this election we DO have to do our best to see what the will of the people was!

That is ALSO why I agree with the Florida Supreme Court decision to recount ALL the undervotes in the state of Florida. As I understand it, they are only counting those ballots that were not read by machines. We KNOW that there can be voter intent in ballots that the machines could not decipher and it is important to know all that we can.

I think it was rather absurd of the initial judge to dismiss the original case out of hand without even LOOKING at the ballots - and that needed to be rectified and it was by the Surpreme Court.

That said, in my view, Bush has every right to go to the US Supreme Court and see what they have to say . . . but I think today's rulings were all correct . . . they ruled in favor of gaining more information and in trying to meet the will of the voters.

The undercounted votes would have been made public due to the Ffreedom of Information act later anyway, and it would have been absolutely sickening to find that we had the wrong person in office after they had finally been examined. This way we can be sure and EVERYONE's voice (Including those who have TECHNICALLY illegal absentee ballots) will have been heard . . . I think that is fair.

There should just be a drink off. Get a keg of BUSCH Light, give 'em a couple glasses, and see who can drink more. First one to pass out loses, puking is allowed... if you drink it...

Other then the judicial system ruling on how the state should count votes to decide the electors, which if I'm not mistaken the Constitution gives to the legislative branch, my problem with another hand recount is this: Gore asked for the hand recount, the Florida courts gave them til a certain day. After that day, Gore still didn't have enough votes, so they just asked for more time and more recounts... Why didn't the Florida Supreme Court just give them the extra time to start with? That's like, okay, the football game is over, but we didn't win, can we have an extra quarter because we think we're really a better team... Isn't the Florida Supreme Court supposed to still be justifying their first ruling? I read what the Federal Supreme Court said, and it sounded to me like they basically said we have no clue what legal basis the Florida Supreme Court used for their ruling, they need to explain it so that it makes judicial sense, not just, well, we feel like ruling this way...

ELECTION MESS A CIA COVERT OPERATION?

Old-timers with covert operations expertise felt in their gut that something about the year 2000 presidential election blitz was part of an intelligence agency covert scheme. In spy parlance, they suspected the American people are victims of "black ops". Invoking "national security", the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency ordered the major press and wire services to play down if not entirely omit any possible CIA complicity mentioned in an Associated Press story later "spiked". Here are portions of the apparently censored story "Thursday December 7 415 AM ET Florida Official Admits Helping GOP By VICKIE CHACHERE, Associated Press Writer TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)- One attorney charged there was a 'sinister' conspiracy to aide George W. Bush. A former CIA agent said he was trying to help GOP voters. A county election official said she let Republican operatives correct absentee ballot applications." And later in the story

As to the Martin County case, AP said "Charles Kane, who testified he worked for the FBI and retired from the CIA in 1975, said nothing secretive and sinister occurred. 'We had an obligation to them', he said of Republicans who had received the inaccurate ballot document.'We had filled out their forms.

We did not see this as altering. All we saw this as was correcting a problem caused by the Republican Party of Florida'" A later AP version omitted these matters.

Even in the apparently suppressed story, Associated Press left out plenty. Retired CIA and other agency covert operations agents contend the Charles Kane who testified in the Martin County, Florida case is the same Charles Kane they have known for many years. They describe Charles Kane as being reportedly as follows :

[He is a distant relative of Albert Gore, Jr. Fancy people use their grandmother's last name as their first name.] Originally published in 1976, by Random House, Inc., the last 80 pages or so of the book give the details of the Samuel Tilden-Rutherford B. Hayes election struggle of 1876, a extremely close election where one candidate got a plurality of the national popular vote and the other got the majority Electoral College vote. Strange, but it centered, in part around FLORIDA and massive corruption of public officials as to the election.

Conspiracy theorists assert that the year 2000 election seems to use the book "1876" as a nearly exact blueprint, for how the nation can be divided up. Tilden, according to Gore Vidal's book, never conceded but lived out his life contending he had been the elected President. Tilden sought at the site of the Presidential inauguration to be sworn in as the elected President but was blocked by armed troops. As re-createed in Vidal's book, the country almost boiled over into a second American Civil War.

Little-known to the public,all the major Establishment news networks and newswire services about to run stories about the American CIA, have to get prior clearance from the spy agency. In the U.S., there is a non-statutory version of Britain's Official Secrets Act requiring articles to be circulated effecting "national security" to be first submitted to be approved. In a like fashion in the U.S., such articles have to be submitted in advance to the CIA Censorship Board or a similar almost unknown agency or commission.

British press outlets and newswire services that run afoul of the law are subject to having their equipment, presses, radio and television transmitting instruments, buildings, and vehicles seized by the London government. On the other hand, American outlets, under presidential edict rather than law-by-Congress, if accused of about to violate "national security", are subject to having their satellite links blocked by the super-secret satellite operations agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, NRO; websites shut down; and their wire service connections, domestic and overseas, terminated. The American CIA and their "privitized" adjuncts, such as reportedly Wackenhut, have long engaged in overthrowing foreign governments, assassinating popular U.S.leaders and officials, caused fake foreign and domestic "emergencies" and coups. WHY is it hard then to believe they would not also orchestrate, on a vast scale, the overthrowing of the American Central Government, to favor, for example, the British itching to return us to a puppet colony status? Some contend we may see the American Constitution overthrown by such means and the nation run by Martial Law as a way of dealing with an expected U.S. financial debacle.

That what ails America most likely cannot be remedied anymore by elections since the ruling elite pick only blackmailable types for high office. That the ultra-rich rule us by the BULLET, NOT THE BALLOT. Leaders some of us thought were charming and possibly good for the people, have been assassinated and falsely blamed onto lone assassins.

Is this the last presidential election for America? And from here on in, ordinary Americans will be interested only in the right to bear arms under the 2nd Amemdment? A guarantee by force against a central government tyranny to abolish all our other beautifully-worded rights, privileges, and immunities set forth in the Bill of Rights? Oh dear God. I used to be one of the biggest Metallica fans but I'm rapidly growing tired of this "New Image" Bob Rock introduced to them in 91'. You obviously haven't obsessively studied the band like I did. Before And Justice For All, Metallica hated publicity and all that popular music crap that I still can't stand. You could only find Metallica played on low rated metal radio stations. They couldn't stand MTV and VH1 and violently refused to be seen on either. They refused to let it be "about the money." When they produced their first music video (One) it was a product of THEIR minds. Since then, they've been letting producers (like Bob Rock) alter their work to tweak the sales. Compare their music from the black album on to their music while Cliff Burton was still around. You'll notice a big change in attitude, sound, and style. They've sold out. It used to be about the music. Now it's about the money, bud. Look at Garage Inc. Based on the old LP of covers that was supposed to be sold for a few bucks, now they've mass marketed covers that OTHER bands have written. Why do that? to make a buck.
(I own every album they've produced. I've earned my right to have their songs on mp3 format.)
Oh yeah, one more thing. Why hasn't anyone filed a lawsuit against Record Companies for price fixing? Anyone notice how even though technology progresses, CD prices have remained around $15 for over a DECADE? Napster is just a counterattack. And I thank them for shaking the music industry like it has. Greedy bastards like that deserve to have it all come crashing down.

TLC and other bands that went quad plantinum went broke mostly do to lavish spending and no investing.

And bands really don't make any money unless they are in the game 10+ years.

I agree with the chad bull****. That was just out of control. But these seem to have a little more substance than the previous ones. Someone ought to do some jail time over this one. And it would be particularly ironic if Bush lost the race because of the tampering. Many of the laws violated were put in place after the fiasco of a mayoral election in Miami a few years ago. Every election worker in Florida should have been aware of the legal issues. No excuses. I didn't like Gore's attempts to keep recounting strategic counties until he got the results he wanted. It was a distasteful way to contest the results. But at least his attempts worked WITHIN the legal framework, rather than outside it.

The simple fact is, those ballot requests were tampered with, and completed illegally. Nothing trumps that. Nothing else really matters. Consequently, they should not count. It doesn't matter if "Bush won", because the number of tampered ballots is greater than the margin of victory. Frankly, if you remove the illegal votes, Bush lost. And I don't think ANYONE should be elected president on a margin consisting of illegal votes.

Now, I don't really care WHO wins the election. I voted for Nader. My guy ain't gonna win this one. But election fraud is election fraud, and someone needs to go to jail for this one.

I thought it was ironic when 19,000 less-than-brilliant people couldn't figure out how to vote properly, and cost Gore the race, and I think it would just as ironic if election fraud in two Florida counties cost Bush the race.

Let's not get so blinded by our support for one side or another that we're willing to overlook a few crimes. And that goes for BOTH sides. They caught the idiots in Florida, but be prepared... the Republicans are going to be looking for their own cases to highlight now. And they'll probably find some. Breaking laws isn't limited to just one party or the other. If you're screaming for heads to roll now, be prepared for them to roll when it's your guys doing it too.

A law is a law, and if you break it, you pay the price.

I agree that this matter and others should be investigated and if necessary jail time dealt out. Both these parties have behaved despicably. Neither of these two guys deserves to be president. I think the institution of voting in this country has been damaged by this whole mess with recriminations that will be felt in future elections.

Absolutely. The question remains, if this progression to the center continues, what sort of buffoons are they going to march out for us in four years? *ugh* I shudder to think. deplorably throughout this mess. Bush started out in better shape as Al tried to weasel out the results he was looking for... but the Republicans are going to get a black eye out of the ballot request tampering issue.
Even though Bush had nothing to do with it, it'll reflect on his party, and indirectly on Bush.

Unless they just brush the ballot issue under the rug,

If the fringe parties, (Reform, Green, Natural Law, Libertarian, etc...) are smart, they'll take advantage of this RIGHT away, and capitalize on the discontent of

Like it or not, the two major parties have grown increasingly more moderate over the last decade or so, competing for the suburban vote, the only real contested
demographic large enough to be worth the effort. The key differences between the two parties have dwindled to a few major issues, and coincidentally, polls on those issues are split almost 50/50, so neither party risks much. (like abortion, affirmative action, etc..)

A serious challenger on both the left and the right of the Dems and GOP could bring a little differentiation back to the parties, and force them to deal with some issues they've been avoiding.
The Green party can do it on the left... the right is a little more up in the air, with the Reform, Natural Law, and Libertarian parties fighting it out.

But hey, wouldn't it be great to find a candidate you could REALLY believe in? One who doesn't cave in to the polls?
One who doesn't waffle on important issues for fear of alienating soccer moms?

Maybe, just maybe, this election disaster will make people realize that they're tired of the two parties. They're sick of the corruption and poll-sitting. And they're ready to vote for someone new. (assuming the democrats and republicans trot out the same yammering idiots in 4 years).

Who knows? Maybe we'll still have to choose from Joe Smith and John Jones in 4 years... but maybe, just maybe,

59 years ago, the nation was shocked by a horrid attack on Pearl Harbor, This one act alone brought us closer yet also into war. Everyone, even those silly Canadians should reflect on the loss the United States suffered and the men that were sacrificed.

Look, it's going to be a Bruckenheimer film. Big explosions, wild SFX, thin plot lines. You've seen the trailers, the shots with swarms of Zeros flying through that canyon. It's going to be visually cool, artistically bankrupt. I'll go see it, just for the boobies and explosions. I won't go to pay homage to war vets.

No, we had to start fighting Hitler because if we didn't Russia wouldn't have stopped their western progress at Germany, but would have taken all of German-occupied Europe along with it.

If the movie doesn't get into the questions of what Roosevelt knew or didn't, then I hardly can see this movie offering much for intelligent people, and will probably not bother seeing it.

The Russians could not have won against the full force of the Nazi army. Something about sending soldiers to the front without guns kinda tells you that. On more than one occasion Russian soldiers had to arm themselves with the weapons of their fallen comrades.

Certainly we were the late-comers to the battle, but without our help, there was little chance of an Allied victory.

Our concern of Russia overrunning Western Europe only arose AFTER the tide had turned towards the Allied forces. That is why we refused to move our forces out of West Berlin and why the vast majority of our European military presence is in Germany.

I'm sorry Butch but you swallowed your History class's line of bull**** a little too easily.

The Nazi push into Russia lasted over a period of about two years. Your notion of the Russian army is very correct as far as the first year goes. The Russians were caught with their pants down by the German blitzkrieg, unprepared and without necessary armament. Millions of soldiers, often fighting without guns, were killed. Luckily for Russia, like so many times before in their history, it was not the Russian army but the feared Russian winter that stopped the Nazis. Unable to push into Moscow, the Nazis backed off for the winter, and prepared to renew the assault in the Spring. This gave the Russians much needed time, and they did not waste it. With an infrastructure that no longer exists today, Russia was able to get its huge war machine moving, and by Spring was equipped with tanks that outperformed their German counterparts, guns with which to fight instead of swords, and an air force that could defend against German bombers and fighters. In spring the Germans again pushed into Russia, but this time they were met by a superior force and driven right back. This was the real turning point of the war. Germany had overextended itself in Africa long before they had to contend with the allied forces to the West. They had no resources left to draw upon to continue pushing out. They may not have yet turned belly up, but their ability to continue conquest was stifled, and it was only a matter of time before they were driven back, as they were already started in that direction by the now advancing Russians. Russia sure as Hell would have occupied everything if the U.S. forces weren't sent to push through Eastern Europe and Africa.

If you look at just about any modern U.S. history text, it treats the European theatre like it was an absolute mess, a total rout for Germany until the U.S. got involved. Look at texts from just about anywhere else in the world, and its more like a war between Germany and Russia, with the U.S. and remaining allied forces throwing in the final dagger into the Nazi's dying corpse after Russia had mortally wounded it. You think Truman and Churchill would have let the Russians have the whole Eastern bloc otherwise? If the Russians couldn't handle the Nazi army, then why did we let them get away with that occupation?

Regardless, perhaps you misinterpreted the original point: the US never committed any forces until Pearl Harbour (yeah, I spelled it Canadian...whaddya gonna do about it! ) Ergo, we (Canadians) didn't need to be bombed to get us out of our collective isolationism. Butch, I'm really not impressed with the way you believe that having talked with a few old geezers who fought in a war 60 years ago renders your opinions infallible. This is the second time you've attempted this in argument, and it hasn't worked yet. On this point we agree. The Nazis overextended themselves by pushing into Africa and the Soviet Union at once. They would have been better served if they had concentrated one way or the other, Western Europe and their African colonies, or the USSR.

This is debatable. The term "best equipment" is subjective to many criteria. German methodologies of production were not well suited to the large scale needs of their forces in the war. German tanks and planes were specially engineered by many different independent producers, and this made war production more time consuming and expensive, as well as increasing costs of maintenance and training. While many of the German engineered devices performed better in the field, inconsistent levels of quality control resulted in a higher rate of breakdowns. This became a critical issue in the battle of Kursk, where the newly commisioned and deployed Gemran "Panther" tanks had overheating problems and were demolished by the advancing Russian tanks, artillery and anti-tank rockets. Allied factories mass-produced cheap, reliable, standardized devices and vehicles that were easier to maintain and cheaper to keep spares for. They may not have been optimized for top performance, but they could get the job done. So who had better equipment isn't as cut and dry as you think.

The Russians were rightfully begging for a Western Front because it had been promised to them by Churchill and Roosevelt! The Russian army was fighting to save their homeland, and I think you underestimate their morale.

Look, my point is this: U.S. army forces weren't deployed until Jan. 1942, a year and a half after Germany and Russia started going at it. Some Air Force support had been sent to Britain a few months before, but their role was mainly defensive at that time. While the bulk of the German forces and resources were centered in Central and Eastern Europe, the U.S. wasted time and energy in Africa, retaking the fiefed African colonies back on behalf of their British and French rulers, running the errands for European Royalty, basically. By the time U.S. forces actually met the Germans in combat for the first time in late 1942, the Soviet army had already cut off the German 6th army at Stalingrad, who were in for a historically dismal winter. With that army wiped out, the Germans had suffered their first major defeat. The Germans were forced back, and the Russian army advanced and gained the initiative. An army of 1.5 million Germans were wiped out, and Hitler never recovered. He tried to bulwark his forces at Kursk and move on to take the Caucuses, but got hammered by the bolstored Soviet army, who had spent the Winter grinding out its own mass produced tanks, planes, artillery, rifles, and rocket launchers. Soviet General Zhukov, who helped plan the manuevers that trapped the German 6th army in Stalingrad, again surprised the Germans, manuevering thousands of tanks, artillery, and launchers within 50-75 kilometers of the German's built up forces without detection. While both sides suffered losses, the Germans were turned back again, and now the remainder of the Eastern front activity would consist of the Soviets advancing, retaking Minsk and other cities which fell in the early days of the German blitzkrieg, continuing all the way to Berlin. Two days after the German defeat at Kursk, U.S. armies touched foot on European soil in Sicily for the FIRST TIME. By then the Soviets had already smashed the German advance, inflicted heavy losses, and killed German expansion. It was now just a matter of pushing the Germans back to their homeland. The U.S. was a late comer who served primarily to bail out Britain and France, who failed to take care of the little German upstart when they had the chance because they found what he was shouting about the communists to be too entertaining.

I have spoken with Stalin's interpreter, who was involved in countless high level international discussions (He was the only person to survive this job), so as much as you would like to believe it was simply a few old geezers who were fed disinformation - you are mistaken. You are sort of right here - As I said, the accepted tank kill ratio of US vs. Nazi tanks was 5 US tanks to 1 German - the US was only able to overpower Nazi tanks through overwhelming numbers and the only way they were able to push out those overwhelming numbers was because the production lines were more streamlined through standardized parts etc. Germany had countless problems with production with all sorts of weapons through logistics and through misdirection of resources by Hitler and his command. For instance, we all know that the Nazis had the first jet warplanes . . . but the effort towards their production was minimal . . . why? Because the Nazi high command thought they needed more tanks . . . why? Because of the Western front. The Nazis flat out had the best technology on the battlefield, but because they did not effectively use that tech, they couldn't win.

In any case, I do not see how you can possibly marginalize the effect of splitting a war to two fronts. Nobody would argue that the Soviets did not fight hard and fight well, but forcing the Nazis to fight a fresh and well armed US force in the West was a savior for the Soviets.

Clearly the US did not simply enter the war for humanitarian purposes - it knew that it had to enter in order to have a strong say in the post-war world - both by preventing a Nazi victory and by undercutting the influence of the Soviets if the allies were to win without the US - but the Soviets were hardly the most important reason for US participation.

My old college roomate was a mudd FREAK. He used to go flying around the country to meets and stuff. He became such a high level player that he was promoted to wizard, which basically was a coder who could create his own subrealms of the mudd world. He could also just build any character he wanted, give him any items, and just tool around the place spreading beneficance or woe as he saw fit. Pretty cool, I guess, if your willing to forego sunlight for a couple years to get to achieve that goal, and desire a position of power over other people with similar aspirations.

As for me, I played D+D solidly, probably at least 10 to 20 hours a week, and sometimes 40-60 during the summers from 4th Grade through high school. It was a lot of fun and helped foster creativity and an interest in reading, which I'm grateful for today. I also never got laid. I tried to play some when I started college (I actually got into a very cool game of Call of Cthulhu, a very different sort of realm), cause there was a gaming club that offered a lot of new games to try out, but I lost interest pretty quickly, what with being in college in New Orleans and all

i dont know, it may be a cool little drawing, but it doesnt seem to capture the personality of the web site. have i been missing something not being around too much lately? maybe it's just me. since i started checking out the site, we've mainly been techies/car people and guys who like to driink and goof off--has all that been lost?

Maybe things will become clear when we see what the mascot is for. As for myself, I am lost too. I thought mascots were supposed to represent what the team, organization, or in this case, a web site and its community, are all about. (Although, now that I begin thinking harder, Slider of the Cleveland Indians comes to mind, along with the Phoenix Suns gorilla. d'oh!) When I think of Got|Apex, I think of deals, hardware, and yes, babes and beer too! hehehe. This little dinosaur, to me, does nothing but succumb to the power of Pokemon over our easily-influenced population. While I am aware of the fact that this mascot contest was intended to bring more people into the Got|Apex community, it seems strange to me that newbies could be expected to know what truly represents the aura of the site. Personally, I think my little deal surfer guy was a much better fit.

basically it boils down to the fact that 2 or 3 huge apartment complexes have been raised around town, and sat empty for 6 - 12 months (probably because the rent is too high)

I figured they bribed someone to submit a law saying that you can't have more than 3 unrelated people living in the same house (forcing them to find dwelling elsewhere, like in the apt complexes), and that you can't park you car in the grass etc...

am I wrong to be hot under the collar about this?

Many stations have consumer advocates that live for the opportunity to blast a public official for trying to make a buck at other people's expense.

The idea is that if 4 or 5 people in a house together are willing to pay 300 or 400$ each (more in California) single and dual income families will be priced out of the neighborhood. What really irks the busybodies is that these people are disproportionately young and minority and college students.

That's the logic. Also, they will try to claim that it is unsafe.

Yeah, as an ex-IT guy I'll tell you. Because that computer is not yours, its the company's. Frankly, it should be YOUR responsibilty to make sure it is in working order at all times, since it is a TOOL ENTRUSTED TO YOU to do your work, not use as if it were YOUR PERSONAL TOY. This would be fair and equitable, but of courese will never happen, so long as managers and officers are allowed to have computers.

2. IT guy locks down the configurations, either through technical features or office policy. This is what usually happens.

If the IT guy was going to wipe your machine, he should have let you know via email or voice, so you could at least save any work data you had, unless there is a policy notifying you that your machine could be wiped whenever and you should prepare accordingly. If he didn't, he ****ed up and you have every right to bitch. If you were warned or if you knew this possibility was out there, I'm afraid I've got
little sympathy.

Lets say they are using Norton Ghost to do the images / re-imaging. (I picked Ghost because thats what I use).

Lets say you edit the boot.ini file, and windows doesn't display the other OS menu on boot.

When the Tech runs Ghost, he will be given a choice of which partition he wants to install the ghost on.

The only possible way to get around that would be an invisible partition, but then you would need a Boot manager installed in the MBR (baster boot record). You may be able to trick the Tech by booting to true Dos and punching in fdisk -mbr. This will clear out the MBR for the time being. The you would have to reinstall the boot manager software.

you could probably use the old OS/2 boot manager, or LILO.

Remedial Plan on Electricity for Gov. Davis

If irony were electricity, the state wouldn't have a shortage. Witness that Southern California Edison is demanding a 10% rate hike after promising us a 10% rate decrease; that the legislative architect of the state's deregulation fiasco wants to take $2 billion of the state's budget surplus to correct his mistake; and that Gov. Gray Davis is now promising to deliver us all from the deregulation dragon after ignoring the problem for his term so far.

At the root of this problem is one astonishing fact: During this energy crisis, Californians have used roughly the same amount of electricity.

But in a deregulated wholesale electricity-generation market rife with speculation and gaming, this power has cost the utilities $5 billion more. In the fully deregulated San Diego retail market, Sempra Energy was able to pass these higher costs on to its retail customers--read victims. However, the state's other big utilities--Edison and PG&E--are still subject to a rate cap. As a result, the latter two utilities have paid substantially more for wholesale power than they have been allowed to charge retail customers. The result: the accumulation of a huge liability that the utilities want paid off with an equally huge rate hike.

Now here's where it gets worse. California's independent electricity generators have figured out how to legally circumvent the state's current rate freeze. These merchant-generators simply send their power across state lines and then resell it back into the wholesale market, which allows them to bypass state price controls. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has the power to stop this "megawatt laundering" but has adamantly refused. Nor will the commission order generators to pay back the hundreds of millions of dollars they legally stole from Californians during last summer's shortages.

How Davis deals with this complex situation will not only define him as a governor. It also will determine whether he is reelected in 2002. In the cynical scenario being pushed by some advisors, Davis continues to cap electricity rates over the next two years, the utilities accumulate a huge debt in a special account and then, once Davis is safely reelected, he allows rates to rise to pay off the utilities. As Davis is doing this, he makes all the appropriate populist noises about protecting consumers from the big bad utilities and the bigger and badder federal regulatory commission.

The problem with this scenario? It simply won't work. You just can't run for president (as many believe Davis aspires to do) as the guy who stiffed an entire state, and it may not even pass the sniff test during Davis' reelection campaign in 2002.

So what's a governor to do? He starts by creating a "California Power Authority" to purchase all the transmission lines of the state's private utilities. This bold action kills three political birds with one mighty stone. If the state's transmission lines are all privately owned, the regulatory commission will no longer have jurisdiction over the lines. That means that Californians will be able to set wholesale rates--not the federal regulatory commission. At the same time, buying the transmission lines provides a mechanism to reimburse the utilities for the losses they have incurred without sticking ratepayers with a hefty rate hike.

How does this work? Simply set the purchase price at a level high enough to compensate the utilities not only for the poles and wires but also to cover the utilities' debt. While this action solves Davis' short-run political problem, he will have to do much more to ensure a stable electricity market. First, Davis' state government must aggressively jump into the electricity generation business as a means of both helping to meet the state's energy needs as well as putting downward pressure on prices.

Second, the newly created California Power Authority must take over the state's Power Exchange (which controls the state's power grid) and Independent System Operator (a marketplace for buying and selling electricity), both of which are poorly run.

Third, increased energy efficiency and better demand-side management represent the most effective immediate means of addressing the current electricity crisis. Incentives must be put back into the deregulated marketplace to reward these activities.

Finally, California must provide a healthy entrepreneurial climate for the development and deployment of small "distributed generation" technologies such as fuel cells. This will allow both businesses and homeowners to meet their future electricity needs without fear of rate-gouging or blackouts. It also will create a key export industry for California and a vital job creation center.

While it's a nice story, the basic fact is that California's power consumption has NOT stayed even remotely, near, NOT EVEN CLOSE to it's consumption prior to deregulation. Maybe he means per capita, or per...I dunno, but I know for a fact that gross electricity consumption has skyrocketed thanks to the "good times".
Second, it has nothing to do with the CalPX or the ISO. It would be like blaming the NYSE or the NASDAQ for poor market performance. What DOES need to be done is combine the two. Really, it's boring stuff, I won't waste your time, but they both basically do the same thing.
And lastly, California IS doing something about fuel cell technology. Unless you like new taxes. LADWP has instituted the "green" program, a voluntary fee you can choose to pay that goes towards green energy programs.

What is the Gospel of Thomas?

The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of sayings attributed 2 Jesus of Nazareth. Unless it is merely a collection of materials that mainly were drawn out of the Biblical gospels, as seems unlikely 4 most if not all of Thomas' sayings, then Thomas is the most important historical source 4 knowledge of Jesus of Nazareth that exists outside of the Bible. It is the most significant manuscript ever found the history of earliest Christianity.

When was the Gospel of Thomas written?

This is a question hotly debated by scholars. Many scholars say that it was written at about the same time, even perhaps somewhat before, the gospels in the bible. Their argument is that most of the sayings in Thomas show no signs of having any dependence on, or knowledge of, the Biblical gospels and so Thomas' sayings derive from oral tradition and not from written Biblical texts. This doesn't seem 2 have been possible after the end of the first century when the Biblical texts began 2 be authoritative in Christianity. Other scholars find bits of evidence that indicate that Thomas was indeed dependent, in part, on Biblical texts, and surmise that the author of Thomas must have edited out almost all indications of the particular styles and ideas of the Biblical authors. Those scholars date Thomas in the mid second century A.D.

Who wrote the Gospel of Thomas?

No one knows. The four canonical gospels and Thomas and other gospels such as the Gospel of Philip (found at Nag Hammadi) were given their names some time in the second century. Scholars of the New Testament generally agree that none of the gospels were written by people who had ever met Jesus of Nazareth during his lifetime. But at a later date names were assigned 2 them that were associated with famous individuals in the earliest church. The name of the person who supposedly wrote the Gospel of Thomas is given in the first lines of the text as "didymos Judas thomas." The word "didymos" is Greek 4 twin and the word "thomas" is Aramaic for twin. The individual's name was Judas, and his nickname "the twin" is given in two languages. The canonical gospels mention a man named Thomas and John calls him didymos thomas. There R also several individuals named Judas mentioned in the canonical gospels in addition 2 Judas called Iscariot. The bottom line is that we do not know who wrote the Gospel of Thomas and we cannot be sure which Judas mentioned in the New Testament also was nicknamed Thomas.

Where was the Gospel of Thomas found?

Portions of three Greek copies of the Gospel of Thomas were found in Oxyrhynchus Egypt about one hundred years ago. They R known as Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 1 (Oxy P 1) probably written not much later than the year 200, Oxy P 654, which can be dated 2 the middle or end of the third century, and Oxy P 655 dated not later than A. D. 250 (dating according to Grenfell and Hunt). A complete version in Coptic (the native Egyptian language written in an alphabet derived from the Greek alphabet) was found in Nag Hammadi Egypt in 1945. That version can be dated 2 about 340 A.D. The Coptic version is a translation of the Greek version. Most scholars believe that the Gospel of Thomas was originally written in Syria in the Greek language.

Is the Gospel of Thomas Gnostic?

It all depends on what U mean by Gnostic. If U mean by Gnostic the belief that people have a divine capacity within themselves and that they can come 2 understand that the Kingdom of GoD is already upon the earth if they can come 2 perceive the world that way then Thomas is Gnostic. But if U mean by Gnostic the religion upon which the Nag Hammadi texts are based, a religion that differentiates the god of this world (who is the Jewish god) from a higher more abstract GoD, a religion that regards this world as the creation of a series of evil archons/powers who wish 2 keep the human soul trapped in an evil physical body then no, Thomas is not Gnostic. This differentiation is very important, because some scholars reason that if Thomas is Gnostic (in the first sense) then it is Gnostic (in the second sense) and, as they believe,Gnosticism (in the second sense) is a second or third century heresy, they conclude that the Gospel of Thomas is heretical, late in date, and without very much historical value in regard 2 Jesus of Nazareth.

What is the basic perspective of the Gospel of Thomas?

It is that the Kingdom of GoD is spread out upon the earth now, if people can just come 2 see it; and that there is divine light within all people, a light that can enable them 2 see the Kingdom of GoD upon the earth. Further, the perspective of Thomas is that the Image of GoD in the beginning (Genesis chapter One) still exists and people can assume that identity, an identity that is neither male nor female. The image of GoD is differentiated from the fallen Adam of Genesis chapter Two. The Gospel of Thomas advocates that people should restore their identities as the image of GoD now, and see the Kingdom of GoD on earth now. Thomas reads the first two chapters of Genesis in a straightforward way, there were two separate creations of mankind; the first is perfect, the second flawed. Rather than waiting for a future end-time Kingdom 2 come, Thomas urges people 2 return 2 the perfect Kingdom conditions of Genesis chapter one. 4 Thomas Endzeit (the final culmination of things) already existed in the Urzeit (the primordial creative time of the past).

Does the Gospel of Thomas reflect the views of Jesus?

Maybe. There was once a Q gospel and a Mark gospel. These were revised and combined into a Matthew gospel and a Luke gospel. So there were four interrelated texts that testify 2 a single view of Jesus; that he was a man who predicted the early end of this world and its violent replacement by a future Kingdom of GoD. If these texts have it right, then Thomas is divergent from Jesus' own perspectives. But there is also a John gospel testifying 2 the present reality of God's Kingdom and the presence of the divine in the world. John's gospel, like Thomas' gospel, focuses on the actuality of the divine in the present. So one must decide 4 oneself whether the John/Thomas perspective reflects Jesus' own ideas or whether Q/Mark and then subsequently the revised versions called Matthew and Luke do so.

What is Q and what does it have to do with Thomas?

If U realize that Matthew and Luke are revised versions of Mark U will see that an extended set of sayings R in Matthew and Luke that do not occur in Mark. Those sayings, it is generally agreed in scholarship, were taken by both Matthew and Luke from a mid-first century document that consisted of a list of Jesus' sayings. That document, which German scholars called "Quelle," has come to be known as Q. It does not exist any longer, but it can be recovered by analysis of Matthew and Luke (simply put, Q was the written list of sayings that we find both in Matthew and Luke but not in Mark). Q was nothing more than a list of sayings. The Gospel of Thomas is also nothing more than a list of sayings. Many of the sayings R the same, but most of the sayings in Thomas are not in Q. Thomas is the same sort of thing as Q was but Thomas is not Q. Probably Thomas and Q circulated separately in the middle or the later part of the first century. Their points of view R quite different, Thomas stresses the presence of the Kingdom of GoD now. Q insists that the Kingdom of GoD will arrive at some future time[/b].

How Many of the Sayings in the Gospel of Thomas come from Jesus?

Who knows for sure? If you take the set of sayings that are in Thomas and that R also in the gospels of Mark or Matthew or Luke (no sayings in Thomas R also in John) then you have a set of sayings that rather reliably come from Jesus. Scholars commonly are so influenced by biblical texts that they assume that any sayings in Thomas that don't sound like sayings in Matthew/Mark/Luke R therefore not sayings of Jesus. However, it is quite possible that Thomas retains sayings that the biblical gospels don't retain and, indeed, that Thomas is more reliable as a guide 2 the sort of thing Jesus said than the biblical gospels R. Matthew/Mark/Luke give by and large the same point of view regarding Jesus as a teacher. Thomas (and 2 some extent John) gives a somewhat different point of view. Perhaps Thomas' point of view derives from Jesus himself. Or, perhaps,
not.

Why isn't the Gospel of Thomas in the bible?

We don't know how the texts in the bible were chosen. Whatever happened occurred principally in the middle of the second century. However the choices were made, it could well have been that Thomas was unknown 2 those who made them. Or there might have been elements of Thomas that were distasteful 2 them. Or, given a preference 4 narrative biographical gospels, Thomas might have been thought irrelevant. We know hardly anything about the process of canonical gospel choice.

Will the Gospel of Thomas be added 2 the bible?

No. The biblical canon is not open 4 debate, it is a closed entity. A church that adds Thomas 2 its collection of scriptures would move outside the margins of orthodox Christianity and no well-known denomination has the slightest intention of adding Thomas 2 its scriptures

Can regular police pull you over on the highway or does it have to be the highway patrol?

I've heard both so I'm really not for sure.

Did you get busted? And if so what for. I think here in NY all cops can do that, even the locals stopping on the side of the road to take a pee on their way to work.

No didnt get stopped, just curious.

I just checked with my brother who is a state trooper here in ny and he said the same as I did. Even if its out of a policemans juristiction they still can arrest you if you look like your doing something suspicious. This is in New York State.

In California, a cop can pull you over on the highway if you are a danger to others (like 100+ mph), but for the most part they cannot and if you do they are pretty easy to fight.

I got this info from a retired cop.

the usually wait within the city limits which usually extend quite a way past the town and catch you there
once they clock you, they have the atuhority to follow you out of their jurisdiction for a given distance
before they have to back off or pull you over

but you figure in my area here
there arent to many areas where there is so much distance between city limits that a cop couldnt get ya anywhere along there

Decibal Calculator?

Does anyone know of a website that tells you how to calculate the total decibals of numerous things at numerous decibals?

what exactly are you referring to? home speakers? auto speakers? oh, and another thing, it is decibels, not decibals (actually, it started out as deciBell (after Alexander G. Bell and got simplified to decibel)

I want to get a Christmas present for my roomate. He is twenty something male and I don't know what he really likes. What are some cool things to get right now?

So basically, it's 10 times the log of the sum of the inverse logs of each decibel value over 10.

A fan of a certain decibel reading simply means that that is how loud it is, correct? Or does decibels for fans mean the measure of the air pressure supplied?

Actually, I don't think it really matters what the measurement represents. If something is based on a logarithmic scale such as decibels, you should use the above equation to sum them.

DBs are the log of the ratio of the amount of power recieved per area from sound waves to the threshold of human hearing.

I'll use metric units.

db = 10log[( X watts/metre^2)/( y watts/metre^2)]

Where X is the amount of energy recived from changes in pressure per second per square meter, and Y is the threshold of human hearing. Its a constant, but I don't remember what it is.

But coleslaw's right, it doesn't matter, we don't need to know that.

Total db = 10log( 10^3 + 10^2.7 + 10^2.1 ) = 32.11dbs, not accounting for noise cancelation.

By the way, all this is from memory, so if it's wrong, I'm sorry. Feel free to correct it.

-Underwear. I **** you not. Underwear is the driver of the laundry cycle. The more we have of those, the less frequently we have to do laundry, thereby greatly decreasing the misery index of life (to use an industry term).

And my crowning find of the year:

-Get him a Boblbee People's Delite or a Megalopolis. These are sort of the hot men's accessory for the season, and you'd do well (are you trying to sleep with him?) to get your hands on one. The poor chicken...no more Mickey Dees for me.. I use to work at a donut shop and the guys making the donuts use to stand over the vats and pick their noses or spit chunks in the dough which was gross. The sewers use to back up into the flour but they still use to bake with it.

Does anybody know more about this? I heard this from a friend:

The chicken they grow for large franchises such as McD or KFC aren't even real chicken. They are born for the sole purpose of being used by these restaurants. They are all connected to a machine (like those babies in the movie the Matrix) being injected with vitamins and minerals so they become fat and meaty. So they don't even run around. They don't even look that much like chicken. They have really under-developed wings/legs and are just really fat (like those chicken in Chicken Run). So basically it is illegal for these restaurants to technically call them "chicken." That's is why you never see anything on the menus that just say "chicken." They always have something with it such as "fingers," "strips," "McNuggets," "sandwich," and so on.

Anybody know more about this? I heard it was on some TV news show.

i guess this is a pretty strange question but whats the story of the three wise men? i've heard of it but i've never heard it.

The star led them to Jerusalem and Jesus's stable and all that, and the rest you can go read up on yourself.

There was a perfect man and a perfect woman. These two feel in love and got married. They had the perfect wedding on a lovely late December evening. After the wedding they were driving home and they see a man standing on the side of the raod. Here it is Santa, and his sleigh is borken downa nd he needs a ride. Being prefect in every way, they are nice and give Santa a ride. WEll a bit alter down the road, condtions become slippery and the car crashes. Only one person survives? WHo was it??

WEll seeing as how Santa isnt real he cant be the surviver because he was enver in the car.
And since the perfect man doesnt exist either, the prefect woman was the only surviver.

Which mens that she had to be driving, which would explain the accident!!

Actually the woman survived because the MAN WAS driving-you see-while the men were busy boasting about the ins and outs of the sleigh crash-and who was the best driver in bad weather-the woman had enough sense to put her seat belt on before the MAN slammed on the brakes and hydroplaned right into a tree. Besides I dont know of any woman who would stop the car to pick up some guy wearing a red suit-Unless of course it was Antonio Banderas.

In the begining was silence

And then came the Word

With that the Universe became filled with Noise and the Light.

Consciousness arose

But it was lonely

And boring, 4 it gnew everything that was and was to be

So it created companions

But they 2 were boring and predicable, little more than marionettes dangling on strings

What 2 Do? the Great Mother asked

If I let them free this would be alot more interesting She thought 2 hurself. With that she gave one of the brightess companions the power to create; and GoD arose.

GoD was an innovative sort and set about creating a New Work, Humanity, whose twists and travels would play them~selves out on a place called Earth and for this a fourth dimensional plane was created. On this place though existed the possibility for those shining stars who came down from the heavens the chance to experience Life and learn the Great Lesson of Compassion and thus Add to the Great Work.

But alas the shining spirits lost their luster in Human~born amnesia and set about doing great wrongs upon each other. Many times did the World did go down in Darkness as GoD forgot the Creator and Humanity forgot it origins.

But Yet the Mother would not give up and each time GoD deigned to destroy the Mother, the Mother would forgive and reset the stage, for the Mother had all dominion over time and space, but mere fragments of lower vibrational understanding.

And yet time and time again the madness and pain continued. One day she took hur prodigy aside.

"We have 2 try something new. This isn't working out, 4 Humanity continues 2 stumble about in Darkness. They just can't seem 2 be able 2 work it out and hold tight 2 their nightmares and pain, thinking it is the only true way. But I want not but 4 My children to be Happy and 2 frolick and create Lightness and Beauty for that is the Creative principle of the One. What can we do?"

GoD pondered 4 a period that spanned the life and death of billions of stars. He considered the great Love in which the Mother had showed in rescuing him from the Darkness again and again and was saddened that he could not pass that Love on to the Forgotten Souls who practiced Will over Compassion.

"I will Go Down and accomplish the Great Work"

The Mother looked at Hur Son with gravity for She gnew the Journey would be a long and testing one, that to Learn and Teach the Great Lesson was no easy thing but she saw the Determination and rightful Heart in his eyes and gave hur blessing.

With that God descended. And returned just as quickly for in Eternity all points are equally connected. A flash of brilliance shined from the sphere but just as quickly darkness fell and the Universe collapsed

The Thousand~yard stare inhabited GoD's eyes. So much misery and useless suffering, he had seen the ugliness that Ignorance fostered. And yet he had seen hope in enough of the Beings 2 see his was not a fool's journey, just a very Long and Arduous one, with plenty of backsliding and slipping on the way up 2 the Golden City on the Mount.

Again he returned and again the Ignorant crucified him, burned him at the stake, gassed him in the chamber, sent him back with vitriol rage at the contention that all might not be what they assumed. Again and again he saw his mesage of Love and Unity perverted by Dogma and Coercion as the forces of Darkness reinforced themselves with those that claimed expediency a virtue highest above all.

And Yet the Hope still shined through, as those he had touched Remembered and kept the True Faith alive.

And each time Beauty blossomed a little longer, a little brighter, for Goodness had a way of preserving itself with a vitality that evil could only lust after.

One of the most Beautiful of the Works was America, for in its creation was laid the foundation for the City on the Mount. GoD had confered with the scared, barely organized rebels, giving them the faith they needed when all seemed turned against them. No more perfect than any other Human, each of the Founding Fathers shared a vision that things could be done the Right way if the past was properly studied and taken in its proper context unshaded by any ideaology except the inalienable Freedoms endowed by GoD and enscribed in the Constitution. And America was a beautiful creation that over time allowed the reset to happen later and later.

And yet it seemed that everytime it came to the edge of Heaven on Earth, regressive forces rallied 2 pull down the Work, insistant in their belief in the prince of darkness that pain and ugliness were the true way.

Try as he might GoD's influence was weak as he entered later in the timestream, as the ignorami's control of the information systems was complete and iron~fisted.

And yet there existed a brief period about 2 thousand years after one of his most pivotal incarnations, a narrow segment of Time where Humans still retained enough autonomy to express themselves freely without fear of government retribution. Time and time again GoD saw this brief Golden Period devolve into massacre and universal war. And yet the possibility existed 4 it 2 go on, if tended carefully and with great forethought. It was just a matter of Waking People Up.

The great Mother looked at hur prodigious son with the warmth of ten thousand suns. "I will join U this time, for the odds R gravely against U and I yearn to see the Great Work complete."

GoD counseled hur against it for he had experienced the sufering and darkness that comes with the descent into Humanity.

Yet hur conviction was solid and unswayable. "I will go down 1st so as set the way for Ur Work. Follow me in one cycle of the twelve and we shall gnow each other by our Birth. It will be difficult as there R great forces working against US and we may not remember who we R or why we R here. It is critical that we meet before the window of Liberty closes 4 if we remain forgotten of our origins there will be No One to roll back the Great Darkness that is falling."

GoD reached out 2 kiss his Creator and with that she descended.

GoD looked over the luminous sphere with apprehension and took a Breath.

To the Heavens he cried, "It Will be Done"

and with that he went down...

What an interesting century it turned out to be, Interesting in the way of that ancient chinese proverb, May You Live in Interesting Times. So much Promise, so much Pain, made you wonder if you ever wanted to do it all over again. Brings back memories of another time, my Queen's time. Oh my mistress of a thousand faces, how I long to hold you dear in my arms again. How we changed the world back then, literally shaking its sleepy foundation we did. I chuckle at the scholars who equate me to the Bard, for they have only half the picture.

I was certain it would never work But Elizabeth showed us all the True way. Any one of the houseservants could have betrayed our secret and off to the gallows we would have gone, but they gnew the greedy pigs we were up against. Lemu memed GoD a quite hilarious set of symbols; GoD laughed out loud and memed a modified, even funnier set to the wide eyed lemur, who then proceeded to break out in a clitter of high pitched squeels of joy. The lemurs made good company; ever so prodigious at the art of archetypes, they often set off GoD's imagination into previously unexplored realms. Very good company indeed.

A wife arrived home after a long shopping trip, and was horrified to find her
husband in bed with a young, lovely thing. Just as she was about to storm out

looking poor and tired, I offered her a ride. She was hungry, so I brought her

because they were out of style. She was cold so I gave her that new birthday
sweater you never wore even once because the color didn't suit you. Her slacks

as she was about to leave the house, she paused and asked, 'Is there anything
else that your wife doesn't use anymore?' "And so, here we are!"

Okay so last year, mother asked me to stay home from the millenium eve parties so as to stay away from all the fanactics, idiots, and drunk drivers. I missed 3 friggin parties. I was SO pissed at her that I wouldn't talk to her for a while. So she tells me that "next" year I can do whatever I want. BIG MISTAKE.

Granted I have to stay in St. Louis, what do you people recommend for a good time on New Years? (Keep in mind I'm not 21 yet, so commercially run parties are out of the question)

New Years Eve

I want to spend this New Year's Eve with someone special at U.S. but instead I have to spend it on the airplane, from Japan to Taiwan. So don't complain!

For the past 3,4 years, I went to my ex-girlfriend's place and spent the New Year's Eve with her family. (My family is at Taiwan).

Sorry, bud. Last year I was in New York in a house party about two blocks from Times Square. While we smoked out and my friends divied out the shrooms and E, cops trying to clear the roof threw guns in our faces and shouted angrily. Fortunately they didn't shoot, must have been about 20 and, being responsible for handling Time Square on New Year's Eve 2000, looked like they were more scared than we were. They never saw the bowl sitting on the ledge, thank God. Later, firemen came up to the apartment because (1) they were concerned that people hanging out the windows might fall out 3 stories to the pavement, and (2) they wanted to check out the action. "IT WAS THE BEST NIGHT IN MY LIFE!!! .

And I've got the pictures to prove it!!! (no cops, though. Didn't seem prudent at the time)

Heheh, I was in Times Square last year, and I'll be back in NYC for this New Year's Eve, spinning at some hole-in-the-wall club down in Tribeca. Should be fun. Anyone who's in NY, look for Ice-9 on club flyers!

As for stuff to do if you're under 21, why don't you just get a big group of friends together and go on a rampage? I used to do that when I lived in the suburbs of Baltimore - we'd all get tanked (except the driver) and drive around making tons of noise and seeing how many other people we could round up, then go back to someone's house and party until we all passed out. Probably the most fun I've had in Catonsville, the town that time forgot. We managed to collect about 20 people that I didn't know last time. Good way to meet random people, too.

After spending 15 or 16 New Years in Times Square we finally called it quits and just in time. I spent the New year drinking Hard Cider in front of a blazing TV screen watching for my kids (who were in the Square in my place)..to see if they were freezing their asses off.(They were warned!)..Worst thing that happened to the oldest was someone puked in the hood of his jacket. They spent the Pre-Millenium hours at THE LIONS den in Manhattan-I hear this was 'THE PLACE TO BE" ...*shrugs*-I think I'd rather be warm than do Times Square again.

Yeah.. I think that was it. There has been a couple as the years has passed... you have to remember it has been *cringe* 6 years since I have had to worry about that kinda stuff. And even when I was 19, I was DJing with Top Cats so I could get into the places and have fun.

Normally, on New Years, since it is all crazy, I have friends over in a controlled environment to have fun... that means no driving crazy with the crazies

Hey I'm looking for a decent DVD player. I'm sure many apex users have them (like the pun? eh? eh?) and some have probably had problems with theirs and some haven't. If you have one that hasn't given you any problems, and the picture quality is nice and has some sort of surround sound (dolby 5.1, dts, etc) included, I would appreciate any feedback. I'm not putting this in the deals forum because I can usually find the deals myself, I just need some info on which ones last, which ones don't, and which I'll have problems with. Well technically anyone in the US can buy them. We have the right to keep and bear arms. The government is not allowed to "infringe" upon that right. That means that any law that interferes in the slightest way is unconstitutional. Our government chooses to ignore that little part about infringement and will get away with it until people take some personal responsibility for themselves and stop allowing it.

ok guys, our TV died a couple of days ago and i'm in the market for a new one. Right now i have my eye on the Sony KV-32XBR400. I've also heard of the panasonic ct32hx40. The best price i can find right now is $1600 for the sony. The tv is HDTV ready. It supports 1080i and 480p (unfortunately it doesn't support 720p). Does anyone have any helpfull comments or suggestions?? I know Pennypinch got this TV a while ago, Are you happy with it?? IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUYING IT??

Staples Mailer - "Internet Coupon Fraud"

I am just curious how many other received the staples mailer for Mrs. Beasley's holiday food. I am a little disturbed by who it is addressed to. I have bought two things from staples and tryed to buy about two other orders from staples during the coupon fiascos a while back. I created an account under a different e-mail address each time, so naturally i received four of the same mailers. However, under two of the mailers they are addressed as such:

My Name
Internet Coupon Fraud
0000 My address #000
My city, CA 00000

Now why the hell are the words "Internet Coupon Fraud" printed right below my name on the mailer? What does this mean? I assume these two mailers that have this heading are from my two orders that were canceled due to the bad coupons. I am upset however that staples would mail an advertisement to me trying to get me to buy something, and attach "Internet Coupon Fraud" below my name. Has anyone else received similar mailings?

On thanksgiving my girlfriend cooked and had damn near her whole family over for the holidays. Unfortunately I had to work and got off at about 1700. When I came home there was hardly any left or just not enough to talk about.

Now most girlfriend/boyfriend would put a plate up for their significant other so when they got off work he would have atleast a plate. But not mine. She was like there was some left over. I confronted her about it and she said I should have asked her to make me a plate before I left for work that morning. Then she said a smart comment "Is there anything I'm suppose to automatically do for you", she's lucky I dont hit females.

This has a little to do with why I probably frustrate people so many people, me and my relationship problems. Any misunderstandings on this board I blame it mainly on her.

What do you think of the thanksgiving situation. Is she right or wrong.
