Any reviews of the PS2's DVD prowess?

Has anyone come across a review of the Playstation 2's DVD capability? I'm trying to figure out if I should buy another DVD player, which seems stupid considering the PS2 plays DVD's. If it really, really sucks, however, maybe I'll think about it... Please post links, thanx, fokes. CLEAR UP CONFUSION WITH PS2 LIMITED RELEASE AND PREORDER

Contrary to what you have read and what not, my comments are not to be flame, i have a friend who happens...to be Japanese, has friend that beta test PS2 games to find out all the bugs... A known fact that has not or havent seen in print is that originally many store or popular chains had large preorders because back then they were going to fullfill them to some large numbers. Study the Japanese PS2 systems were coming back to the store due to defected use or early malfunctions in their DVD, and yes the popular Overheating problem was back, and some minor problems like Anti-Aliasing in the graphics....So Sony made a move to not dissappoint the USA fan to not release the badly design PS2 and revamp by fixing the overheat problem, and anti-aliasing the graohics...heres something to think about if you think SOny is doing as a marketing scheme 1.) put out a rumor that it was overheat related and antialias graphics..so that it can be fix and reproduce them..but instead of reproducing them send out the malfunctioning ones, 2.) or did sony really didnt meet demand? come on now..they had to, how could you not think its going to be the biggest thing to hit the video game console since PSX? 3.) or my friends friend is lying ? i dont know... but for all you who want ot get one and not be preordered? you guys can get them at BESTBUY, CIRCUIT CITY, FRED MEYER...they didnt take preorder..becuase they knew they couldnt keep up with demand... my 2 cents dont flame me its what i heard... __________________ Sony will dump a huge batch of PS2's on the US market about two weeks before Christmas. This will be similar to when Nintendo "found" an extra lot (200,000 units) of N64's at the end of November a couple of years ago. __________________ The anti-aliasing problem is not a defect. The problem was that using Sony's reference anti-aliasing technique caused a severe performance drop. This is not related to any problem in the manufacturing, just poor design. This problem has been reportedly worked around as you can see in Tekken Tag Tournament. You are correct about the DVD/overheating problems, but Sony has already released a revised version of the PS2 in Japan (SCPH-15000) to resolve these issues. I see no reason why these design revisions wouldn't have been used on the US design to begin with. No one can really say if this is a marketing ploy or not. It certainly convinced my friends and I to go wait out in front of Best Buy for 5 hours . That's just the sort of hype Sony is looking for. UDM __________________ Admittedly, I haven't really been following the whole thing with PS2's since I'm not planning on getting one any time soon, but from a business perspective I seriously doubt this is a marketing ploy. I have read about the technical glitches, but if I remember correctly, CNBC reported that the shortage of PS2's was related to a shortage of chips. The video game market brings in more revenue for Sony than ANY other component of their business. It is also the aspect of their business that they foresee as having the greatest growth potential. They would not purposefully hurt that potential growth - nor their stock price - by fabricating a problem. Trust in management and trust in the ability to come through is an EXTREMELY valuable commodity, and planting any seeds of doubt to counter all they've worked for is quite silly - especially for such a relatitively short term gain. MANY companies warn when earnings are not going to meet expectations. Same concept - it's not a marketing ploy - It's a way to limit damage. Smart companies always think long term - not short term.
