But to answer your question.
the r?? files are RAR files you need to d/l a unRAR. it works like Zip. make sure you have all the RAR files. cause it is all together.

More Metallica crap

I don't mean to beat a dead horse or anything but I just came across this and thought I'd share:

Forbes listed Metallica as #38 of their top 40 entertainers of 1998. They're valued at $38M.

Here's the link: http://www.forbes.com/tool/toolbox/entertain/

I guess they're tired of being rich, going after their fans liked that....

Oh well, not my problem. BTW, Apex, great site!

Anybody else think this is the case? My errors ask me if I want to debug, and then it takes me into a Microsoft Development Environment program (I have Microsoft Visual Studio).

I believe it may be a problem with the ads on the pages, but I have nothing to back that up with, and I'm too lazy to check.

Reviewers needed at Got|Apex?

Alright folks we are currently trying to recruit 2 reviewers. You must be at least 18 years old and you need to shoot me a writing sample. Maybe review something you have laying around, like your girlfriend, wife etc, be very detailed But seriously, shoot me your application at: DARTH@gotapex.com

Sample Review, what do you guys think?
Hey Darth, this is Y2J, the ayatollah of rock and rollah. I am here before you today with a review. Nah, its more of a Anandtech review. Just kidding, folks, WinME is on the horizon, and I have all the gritty details for you, from the greatly expanded Help section to the All-New and redesigned Start-Up screen. Yes, we have all been looking forward to this with the hope that it will improve our PC's performance. Rumor has it the Microsoft wants out computers to start in 30 seconds. That means less time staring at the new and improved WinME splash screen. Disappointed? You shouldnt be, on the horizon for Win98, but already included in WinME, is Media Player 7. MP7, as its knows by us 'inside' workers, comes with skins, that not only change the colors of the player, but also may change the shape completely. Let me explain, the "Headrush" skin gives the user a view of a green man's bald skull. But instead of a shiny bald spot, we see a small video screen where either movies play or audio visualzations swing to the beat of your favorite MP3. Also, the start menu allows more customizing than earlier versions on Windows. The control panel, printers, and dial-up netowrking are all expandable from the start menu. That means, that instead of clicking on the Printers icon and opeing the folder with explorer, you can see all of your printers while browsing your start menu. I can hear the ooh's and aah's now. I bet most of you cant wait to get your hands on this baby. But wait, and yes there is more. The Windows Movie Maker, actualy a useful program, lets you takes parts of an AVI, add sound, change the order around, etc. Very easy to use as well. It also comes with a Scanner and Digital Camera Wizard, which includes (up to June 28th) the newest camera and scanner drivers. Also, USB support is increased as brand new joy-mice work out of the box. Another extremely import item included out of package is the Windows Millennium Edition Preview. This includes an introduciton to the Media Player as well as some other very importand tips and tricks for use with your new OS. Got any questions? Email me, david@goclippers.com

thread closed??

att: yup. It does matter what car you buy, however. Say you buy an M-class: no duty because it's American made. However, if you buy a CLK, it's made in Germany, so there WILL be a hefty duty. The Odessey's duty free, the BMW Z depends on which VIN's...you kind of have to check the build origin.
I could help you out with it if you were interested, e-mail me. The only problem I see with that is that you have to pay the taxes up front. HOWEVER, so long as you live outside of canada (which I assume) you can get the GST (7%) back in full. Think of it as a rebate. If you buy in BC (west coast) you can get the provincial sales tax back so long as you sell the car. Pretty tricky, but I've done it twice now.
__________________
wont you have to pay some pretty large taxes when the car is registered in the states? i thought i heard that they made a law to tax people who tried to buy cars for less by leaving the country, or even just for driving to say arizona from california. if not, you could probably go to a state with no sales tax and walk away pretty cheap.
__________________
See, that's the thing, I haven't yet registered my car here, so I don't know what the story is there...I assume if you live in Oregon or something, you're scot free. I mean, still, you'll be paying the tax on it anyways. If you can get the car a coupla grand below what you were going to pay for it anyway, the tax is a non-issue.

I hear tales of the network + test being pretty simple, although for $180, I don't know if I really want to find out.

I think if you have MCSE, N+ is kind of a moot point.

Proxy 2, interesting choice for an elective. I'm suprised you didn't opt for the IIS to get the MCP + I and only have to do 2 more for MCSE + I, since you did the TCP/IP.

Congratulations!! now you can start boning up on win2k if you want to keep it.

I hear ya- more certs the better, is what i am thinking. I figire NETWORK+ like the A+ is a lifetime cert- Forget the money it costs to take the exams- You'll always make that back at your job. Your resume is KEY-Certs are key, but better than certs is experience. I am finding that i am having trouble getting a job cause i do not have admin experience. I am 2nd level software support right now at a major East Coast copany. IM trying to get away from end users-that is why i made the MCSE and A+. I think I am going to get my CNA ( one exam) Network + and then start boning on Novell. As far as the +I designation after MCSE. The NT4.0 trak is retiring as we all know and Microsoft said that in the Win2k track- there will be no +I distinction or designation because they feel that it is integrated in the curriculum. That is whi bailed the whole +I idea.

Not to burst your bubble, but the Net Ess test is as easy as they come. They are a LOT harder after that, I don't even know why that test is administered to tell you the truth. It's best to be able to have at least two computers to be able to set up a home lab to run stuff. If you're just starting the track, I HIGHLY suggest you just abandon the nt4.0 track and go w/the nt2000 track. The W2K tests are live now and its basicly a complete waste of time, money and energy putting any effort towards mcse nt4.0. As far as s/w: I recommend the HOT kit from microsoft (hands on training). You get full copies of win2k pro, server and advanced server for $129. It also includes some online training which I didn't do, but looks ok.

Sky, I looked for over a year for my first admin job. I did turn down a couple of offers that were either GU (geographically undesirable) or FU, but eventually I got "lucky" and got a job through a friend. Definately the BEST way to get a job!! I think I'm going to get my A+ cert next and then start working on the win2000 series. I am so fLIcking mad @ uSoft for doing it this way, but I guess it will weed out a bunch of "paper MCSE's" (hopefully not myself!!) and make the cert that much more benefi$ial.

BTW, look for the evil empire to release W2k SP1 later this month. It's only a 250Mb patch.

Cheers!

The HOT kit is a msoft direct access product available through them ONLY. You can get the product here: http://www.microsoft.com/directacces...it/win2000.asp

However it is currently out of stock, so try back later I guess. This is the CHEAPEST legal copies of ms w2k available. (with a few rare exceptions.. I hear Univ of Texas students get any ms product for $5.00 a CD for example...) There are also HOT kits for office 2000 for $99 which isn't too bad either. 120 day eval copies are available in a some books, although I don't know any off the top of my head. As far as getting MCSE w/out ever loading up windows NT or W2k, it is possible, but I don't recommend trying it. You learn way more from dinking around with it then from any book. You need to be able to get a feel for it and where to go to find the tools/info you need. A lot of the commands that are commonly used in windows 2000 / NT4 are not available to w9x. It's a totally different OS.

I know that frustration!! Don't give up or let them wear you down though. The job will come. Form alliances and meet people that are in a position to help you out or know other people who might. I know how tiresome that sounds, but I think that it's WAY more productive than blindly flying out resumes to monster/dice (although that works too!). Just hang in there and DONT SETTLE!!!

Geoff

MS HOT kit has w2k: Pro, server and advanced server.
I don't have the kit in front of me here @ work, but it has all three OS's on their own disks, plus at least 2 training disks and maybe a "sales kit" disk as well. It's a really really sweet deal.
The only version it doesn't have is Data Center Server, and that isn't released yet. (look for it in the next couple of weeks though.. about the same time as SP-1)

As far as training materials, the "official" training track from MS is in distribution now and being administered at Certified MS facilities. Exam Cram has just released the W2K series, which was probably the best series as far as I am concerned for NT4.0, and the series I will first pick up when I'm ready to update to win2k cert.

Good Luck!!!!!

actually, now that I look at the MS HOT kit website it says:

The Hands-On Training (HOT) Kit Program is currently under evaluation. We want to determine whether or not the HOT kit is the best vehicle to meet your training needs as well as supporting Microsoft initiatives and strategies. Please look to this location for information on future training materials

So, it looks like this deal is closed.

MCSE and A+ should be able to get you where you want to go right now. I would wait and persue Cisco certification when you can get your employer to pay for it!! (that's what I plan on doing.... as soon as I can get a good understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing now! ((WIN2K)) )

Phlick, I said CNA(Certified Novell Admin), not CCNA(Certified Cisco Network Administrator).

I got a job offer the other day and they wanted Novell experience. So i think i should at aleast get just the CNA cert. Its on exam, just done know which one. I think it may be like Micro$oft where you you get your MCP with one test type thing but i am not entirely sure. I checked out Novells website and it looks that way. I just need to know from the peanut gallery which one is best to prepare for. I have this awesome testing software that has like over 6000 questions in it and i love it cause it helped me pass Proxy 2.0 and Network+. The s/pdif port you're talking about is a coaxial digital port, toslink is fiber optics. Two different types of digital inputs. So, you'll need to get the live drive II for toslink or get a convertor from toslink to coaxial digital.

the s/pdif is a Dolby Digital signal for Dolby digital receivers for surround sound. So far, the best set of speakers we have for use in conjuction w/ the Live is a set of 5.1 surrounds.

The OLD (no longer in production) Optical I/O card will connect to the small header on the Live Value. Therefore, the Hoontech cards should do it too. (Customers have reported that the hoontech cards work well with the Live series. )

Posting guidelines...a possibility?

Posted this in the VAIO thread in deals, but maybe better visibility here? Wow, I bet no-one ever says that!

This is somewhat OT, but with regard to the requests page, I mentioned it a while ago, and I've come to the conclusion that requests should probably follow three, very simple rules to improve the forums:
a) They clearly state they're requests. That way, you open the thread with full knowledge of what's going on.
b) There is some mention of the best price the asker has found so far.
c) The asker does a quick search of the forums before posting anything.

I think the lack of these three things is beginning to annoy a lot of people that really don't mind helping. So I guess the ideal topic title would be "Can anyone beat $xxx on a xxx?" THAT's something that helps everyone. If you can beat it, post. If you can't, then it's a good deal, right?

Apex, now that everyone thinks you're a sissy (posting deals on sateen sheets...good god... ), maybe make this a rule? Some people are getting really short-tempered with stupid thread titles, and the forums have begun to deteriorate somewhat.

I agree it seems to have become much worse latley. I dont know what is more annoying, when people post something in the wrong place, or when people keep moving it to the top by replying just to tell them it's in the wrong place. I think the problem is that a lot of people are just in a hurry to start posting and never bother looking at the rules. It may be more work than it is worth but it might be possible to eliminate some of the problem by changing the "post a new topic" page. What if you could make it so that there were some radio buttons (the kind where you are only allowed to click one of several options) where you had to pick what best descirbed your post. Have options like "post a deal", "request a deal", "post a referal", ect. Then automaticaly post the topic in the correct forum based on the response. Given it would still be easy enough to post in the wrong form but it would almost have to be intentional to do so. You could even put simple discriptions like *Post a deal (no referals). It wouldnt eliminate the problem and it might not even be worth the trouble but at least it would make it more obvious for new users. Also you could feel better about locking or deleting threads knowing that if they are in the wrong spot it is probably intentional. Just an idea.

I agree with Badfish too. I think some people totally disregard what topic they are under and post a topic anywhere. There should be a drop down menu like badfish said under which topic you want to post in, the default being "pick topic here" so that you would have to choose a topic. That might help for some of the mess.

There are many ways to hack the ubb so that it is modifed to your liking. I think currently the boards are great the way they are. it is the people that don't follow rules. that is why we have moderators .

even with buttons ppl will abuse them and still post to wrong place. the only surefire way is to moderate all postings before they are allowed to be shown but that is long hard and waste of time for the moderators to do.

Is it true that Virginia has the lowest car prices?

I live in Detroit and work in the automotive industry. We see more and more used car buyers coming in from Canada. They can mark them up quite a bit when they sell even when paying tariffs and taxes.

No idea a about where is the cheapest, but I would go with somebody that has a warranty that covers bumper to bumper when buying used. It pays for itself. Read the small print. Sometimes there are hidden deductables for anything.

FYI - XBR400 finally released

I think a few people were interested in waiting for the new 400 model to come out. Anywaz, I just saw it advertized on Crutchfield's newest catalogue so just wanted everyone to be informed. Though it is $500 more than I expected it to be.

32"XBR400 - $1999.95
36"XBR400 - $2499.95

I'm in the market for the 36" version. But I'm not sure I can justify spending $2500 on a tv. If anyone figures out a way to get this TV for a bit cheaper. Do remember to post.

OK, I take it these are not the WEGA models, but the models one step lower?

These would be the higher end models of the WEGA's.

I believe I've seent he lowest 36" Wega for as little as $1200. Maybe even less.

[This message has been edited by Doofy (edited 07-19-2000).]

Besides the difference in the options (ie: 2 tuners vs 1 and I/O options) is there any difference in the high end vs low end WEGAs as far as picture quality? (when was the last time I used my PIP or that spare couple sets of RCA jacks on my current set anyway..... ????)
__________________
So how much does a 25" go for, Doof?

These new 400 models are HDTV ready. Which I learned in an earlier posts, means you can buy the HDTV decoder to add on to the TV. The older models are not HDTV ready.

How much does a 25" go for?? Dunno. I don't think they make it. The XBR models only come in 32" and 36" last I checked. Even the regular Wega line doesn't have 25", only 21" and 27" I believe. If you want prices on those, someone on this board suggested to go to pricescan.com. The new 400 models aren't even listed in Pricescan yet so don't bother with that.

I think this new model has 4 S-Video jacks. And you can Zoom in/out of either PIP. I know. To some it seems like a useless option. But for others, it's just nice to know you have an option even if you don't use it.

Thanks for the info, I'm looking at what I assume is a 27" for about $410. I'm interested in the bigger ones, I wonder how low I can get those for. I'd be getting a very small quantity, FYI, so I guess we'll just do an auction or something if I can get them more cheaply than $1200.

Where was it you saw the 36" for $1200? I've been seeing them for around $1500.

If the new boxes are HDTV ready then $2500 seems like a pretty good price. Are you sure that they are not merely "digital" tv's? Most all of the HDTV sets I've seen have been over 4 large, and projection screen at that, I don't think I've seen any CRT HDTV sets, although I really haven't been out pounding the streets looking for one.

Also, how much are HDTV decoders going for now? (ballpark) Thanks!

For a little while on pricescan.com they had the XBR model250 for $1600 which is pretty cheap. The lower end WEGA, FV series I think, normally sells for around $1400-$1500. But I have seen them for as low as $1200 once. Forgot what site though. Do a search on the forums for TV, cause someone here had given me that site name.

Also, the description on the crutchfield catalogue indeed does say HDTV ready. And a salesmen at the SONY BLDG here in NY also confirmed that with me around a month ago. I'm not sure how much the decoder boxes cost though. I'm not really in the market to buy one. I just wanted my next TV to be HD ready. Doesn't make sense to spend so much on a TV and not have it "ready" for the next 10 years.

Buying a Media Job

From: http://www.skolnicksreport.com/mediajob.html

Buying A Media Job
by Sherman H. Skolnick

So, you want to be a talking head on a local TV station. And read the alleged "news" from the idiot machine.

Requirements:

1. You have to be about 28 years old.

2. If a woman, blondes preferred. Light-skinned blacks permitted BUT must look like a doll.

3. Must be able to read items about bloody wrecks, airplane disasters, and tornados without showing much visible emotion.

4. You cannot show any politics in what you are reading.

In most of the bigger markets, such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, you have to buy the job through the local, handful of celebrity lawyers.

The terms are as follows: in a three-year conract, paying a big buck, you have to agree to pay under the table, a minimum of 15 percent, in front, in cash, of the total amount you would receive in the first year of the contract. Of that, it is to be divided up as follows: one third to the union business agent, one third to the celebrity lawyer, and one third to the news director or station manager.

I have been on the periphery of the media since the early 1960s. A few examples have come to my attention. Because of our role as crusaders opening up scandals, items that are suppressed by the monopoly press are sometimes referred to us, on the sly, together with the corroborating details. Media people in key places confide in us. We never, never, never divulge sources. Judges that we have fingered publicly for bribery have numerous times over the decades, put me, as the head of our court reform group, in jail and prison for so-called "contempt of court", for absolutely refusing to divulge sources.

Over the decades as well I have become a sort of father confessor of media people with a problem. [I once taught civic investigation at a Chicago broadcast school.]

Media people confide their problems to us, in confidence, knowing that we will never reveal who they are and will oftentimes come up with a proposed solution to save their neck and their job. I have usually met with such people in the middle of the night at some out of the way meeting place. What follows is a typical example:

"Sherman, the so and so's fired me. And I am only in the first year of my three-year contract. BUT, they cannot do that!" the media person forcefully exclaimed. "I paid in cash, in front, the fifteen per cent as required. I bought the job. The money was divided up on the business agent of the union, this special lawyer that handles the buying and selling of media jobs, and the balance went to the news director. I was also of course the right age and look. Hey, the job belongs to me. They cannot fire me!" he emphasized.

He outlined to me how this system works throughout the media industry.

He offered other examples, some of which we already knew about from talking to other media people.

"I'll try my best to help you and keep all this confidential. After all, you and your pals have in the past given me the lowdown on several suppressed scandals, and gave me the rundown on the inside dirt at your outlet. So I owe you one." I told him.

"I bought the job, that's the system. They cannot fire me!" he repeated, his voice showing his anger.
In my most compassionate manner, I quietly told him. "Well, you are unfortunately in the same category, I am sorry to tell you, as a bank robber on the way from the stick-up. A crooked cop beats you up and rips off the loot for himself. And you want to sue for brutality and recovery of your property. Such a lawsuit is not allowed. It is, the courts say, against public policy, since you bought the job. It is against the public good to be buying and selling jobs, such as in the mass media." I showed I understood his plight.

"Listen, as an alternative, what kind of dirt do you have on the celebrity lawyer, the union business agent, and the news director? Maybe that would pressure the bastards to leave you alone." I asked.

"Why? You think I should turn them in to the IRS with this? The so and so's do not report the job pay-off money on their taxes." He responded.

"Aw, come on now, don't be silly. Right before the April 15th each year, the media honchos go along with the IRS and report a few evaders the IRS has fingered. So as to scare the rest of the public into sending in their form 1040 without question, just like it is required instead of actually, voluntary. The media bosses seldom go on the air with IRS corruption like we dig up." I told him.

No lawyer would undertake to sue for him. So, he went on to some other line of work. Being handsome and personable, he was suitable for being a friendly, productive salesman.

Some long-time network reporters that confided in me were worried about their jobs and their pensions. A foreign outfit was trying to take over the news operation division. I gave them some inside data we compiled on the sharks trying to grab their section of the network. So, all of a sudden the veteran correspondents were sneaking by some hot, political assassination type items, during the night on the radio end. Sort of to scare a few would-be network grabbers. It worked.

In the process of all this, we found out the requirements for network correspondent to cover, for example, the White House: [1] As a woman, they have to start out about 40 years old. The networks push away women White House reporters if they are over 58 years old. Men, however, can cover the White House even if they are over 60, but not women. It is a form of known discrimination. Network news anchor faces usually do not have their contracts renewed if they approach 60 years old. Once in a while there is an exception.

Some of the younger reporters for networks that cover the White House, are actually assets of foreign intelligence agencies. One such reporter keeps track of all of the President's phone calls and meetings with persons in the White House. Hey,how is that done? Supposedly for a price, he will share the data with a reporter working on piecing together some supposed White House scandal.

In the 1960s and 1970s, I was often on the commercial TV for 40 seconds or so, talking about the voting cases that I brought in the federal courts being I am self-educated in law. I was called "Mr. One Man, One Vote" referring to the numerous election district reapportionment cases that I brought and won on behalf of myself and all voters similarly situated. But in 1988 I got put on the crap list for being too outspoken. I had confronted Don Hewitt, top honcho of CBS's "60 Minutes" Program. I gave him a lot of specifics about the buying and selling of media jobs. I was naive, I now realize, to believe that "60 Minutes" would expose this dirty business.

Don Hewitt screamed all over me and in so many words, told me I will never again be allowed on the TV anymore. After that, the only time you could see me on the TV as starting in 1991 when I became a regular panelist, later moderator/producer, of a non-commercial, public access weekly Cable TV Show in Chicago, called "Broadsi

Could it be the free CDs, the free t-shirts, the free food, the free Biowire Laser Pointer, the free $90 Picnic Backpack (from Nissan), the free $50 GC (from Oldsmobile), or maybe the free pair of Motorola Talkabout radios (from Buick)? The list goes on and on...not to mention the numerous coupon code posts as well (dSports, B&N, buy.com, etc).

And I, for one, greatly appreciate Maggie's posts and do not consider them to be crap at all.

You have taken the joy out of visiting this site, Pennypinch. This used to be a friendly place where people could unselfishly share good deals and provide requested information/assistance to others. I really hope there are no others on this site like you.

Agreed, don't take what pennypinch said ugly. I'm sure the majority are behind me when I say that you and Maggie are greatly aprreciated. Heh, I really like that little laser pointer I got the other day .

Dang I disappear for a couple of days and everyone is at each others throats now.

But seriously...Penny you need to take a chill pill man. Ugly and Maggie do find some VERY good deals. Ugly has pulled some great freebies from all around. He listed some of them above. Maggie has always posted great deals. I myself love the mypoints links she has a nack of finding.

To Ugly and Maggie...keep up the good work.

I agree with all, I am truly contrite for some very hastily typed comments (a function, I'm sure, of typing while at work). I'd like to apologize for characterizing your posts as crappy; they certainly, as your second post elucidates, are not only samples of nair or pet weight loss programs. I don't even know if those were yours, but by "crappy", I meant freebies of the smaller variety, as opposed to normal gift certificates or deals of the more conventional variety. Please accept my sincerest apologies: there was no ill will inteneded at all to any of the three of you.
I would take issue with one statement. I am not a sole reason that some of the joy of visiting this board has disappeared. I've been here for close to a year now, and have really seen a market transformation. I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps it is fond recollection viewed through rosy coloured glasses, but I remember a better time.
Again, sorry.

Maybe its just me, but I think all this hate is coming out because its getting "crowded" in the forums. There's about 2600 members now!

No problem, Pennypinch. All of us tend to have our off posts! lol I know I did awhile back!

But yeah, I agree that things have changed in here with deals and all. Last Christmas (Dec. 99) I was able to buy X-mas gifts for all of my family and my husband's family for about $50. Not too bad! Now, there seems to be an abundance of free t-shirts, and some $$ off coupons for high minimum purchase. I'm betting a lot of that is due to companies wising up, but...

Anyway, just my 2 cents!

Yeah, spidey, and I've noticed that a lot of members are new - in the last two weeks. I actually noticed an increase of over 50 members one day! I don't know if "hatred" can be attributed to lots of people, though!
Look, so long as we aim to avoid Anandtech-ness, we'll be okay. Maybe it won't be exactly like before, but that's not always neccessarily bad or wrong.
