Posting guidelines...a possibility?

Posted this in the VAIO thread in deals, but maybe better visibility here? Wow, I bet no-one ever says that!

This is somewhat OT, but with regard to the requests page, I mentioned it a while ago, and I've come to the conclusion that requests should probably follow three, very simple rules to improve the forums:
a) They clearly state they're requests. That way, you open the thread with full knowledge of what's going on.
b) There is some mention of the best price the asker has found so far.
c) The asker does a quick search of the forums before posting anything.

I think the lack of these three things is beginning to annoy a lot of people that really don't mind helping. So I guess the ideal topic title would be "Can anyone beat $xxx on a xxx?" THAT's something that helps everyone. If you can beat it, post. If you can't, then it's a good deal, right?

Apex, now that everyone thinks you're a sissy (posting deals on sateen sheets...good god... ), maybe make this a rule? Some people are getting really short-tempered with stupid thread titles, and the forums have begun to deteriorate somewhat.

I agree it seems to have become much worse latley. I dont know what is more annoying, when people post something in the wrong place, or when people keep moving it to the top by replying just to tell them it's in the wrong place. I think the problem is that a lot of people are just in a hurry to start posting and never bother looking at the rules. It may be more work than it is worth but it might be possible to eliminate some of the problem by changing the "post a new topic" page. What if you could make it so that there were some radio buttons (the kind where you are only allowed to click one of several options) where you had to pick what best descirbed your post. Have options like "post a deal", "request a deal", "post a referal", ect. Then automaticaly post the topic in the correct forum based on the response. Given it would still be easy enough to post in the wrong form but it would almost have to be intentional to do so. You could even put simple discriptions like *Post a deal (no referals). It wouldnt eliminate the problem and it might not even be worth the trouble but at least it would make it more obvious for new users. Also you could feel better about locking or deleting threads knowing that if they are in the wrong spot it is probably intentional. Just an idea.

Fish, that is a FANTASTIC idea...only problem is, I am not totally familiar with UBB or whatever we use here, but isn't this whole thing just a design that Apex pays to use? So modifying it substantially is not possible...right? Unless Apex is better at code than we all thought...

Yeah, I think you are right Pennypinch. I believe it is just a package that Apex pays for. I am not sure if it can be customized like that. It would be nice though.

I agree with Badfish too. I think some people totally disregard what topic they are under and post a topic anywhere. There should be a drop down menu like badfish said under which topic you want to post in, the default being "pick topic here" so that you would have to choose a topic. That might help for some of the mess.

There are many ways to hack the ubb so that it is modifed to your liking. I think currently the boards are great the way they are. it is the people that don't follow rules. that is why we have moderators .

even with buttons ppl will abuse them and still post to wrong place. the only surefire way is to moderate all postings before they are allowed to be shown but that is long hard and waste of time for the moderators to do.
