Owners of SONY Wega XBR TV's ... please advise

I was under the impression that the WEGA is NOT an HDTV. In addition, you usually have to buy and HD decoder in addition to the HDTV...I thought the WEGA was just a really nice regular TV.

I'm in the market to buy the 36"XBR. And yesterday a salesmen told me the TV is not HDTV READY. Is this correct? Why would Sony's top of the line Wega not be HDTV ready??

I know I read a few of you have this TV already, so I was wondering if you could confirm this.

FYI, in case anyone else is in the market for one.

I went to the SONY BLDG here in NYC and asked one of their salesmen for some info. He said the current 36" Wega XBR (model 250) is NOT HDTV ready. But in the coming month, a new model (he thinks it will be model 400) will be. Now this box that everyone is talking about, I think those converter boxes only work for HDTV ready TV's.

Tongyang, you are correct, the widescreen model is HDTV ready, but I can't afford that one. I think I will wait for the model 400. According to the salesmen, the current model will drop in price to around $1600, so the new one whould still be a little over $2K.

Thanks for the help everyone.
