How is it that George Harrison gets attacked while Ringo gets his own BBC children's show.

Hmm

I guess no one realizes and appreciates the genious that was John Lennon. May he rest in peace.

The local (DC) news was making a big deal about Giuliani not extending the curfew on central park for an all-night vigil.

People never cease to amaze me. I mean, he was merely a friggin entertainer for crying out loud! Then again, we're talking about a society that cares more about Diana's death than Mother Theresa's.

John Lennon was more than an entertainer; he was part of American culture, and the culture of the rest of the world as well. His lyrics and music reflected the attitude and ideas of his era. People felt very close to Lennon through his music, which is why his death was such a tragedy. Rolling Stone recently (week of November 9) had a wonderful series of articles and other celebrities' views on his life and untimely death.

He was "only" an entertainer. He was extremely good at what he did. The rest of the world made him all the rest of the stuff you mentioned.

Yes, his works inspired many others.
Yes, the world was probably made poorer by his death.

But "tragedy"?

I guess I just don't understand the whole "need for stars/heroes to worship" thing.
