I'm sure by now everyone has caught a glimpse of the 'infamous' confusing ballots on TV or in the newspapers..They looked pretty simple to me (um..ok follow the arrows people)...What I don't understand is why all these people NOW are complaining and whining about "WAAAAA ..we were confused...waaaaaaa..we didn't want Buchanan we wanted GORE..WAAAAAA" WHY THE HELL didn't they ASK someone at the polling booths how the hell to read the damn ballots if they were confused? why submit a BALLOT if you supposedly don't know how the hell they work. I think its a pretty lame excuse for GORE being behind in those votes. Now the new thing is 3 idiots NOW HAVE lawsuits saying they were duped into voting for the wrong candidate. It's a simple case of Political Envy. __________________ hehe. I saw that as well. The people there must be too stupid to get confused __________________ I mean, yes, they must be nimrods, but at the same time, if you're confused, you're confused, and 3000+ votes for Pat "Shoot the Mexicans" Buchanan doesn't make much statistical sense when you're talking about far less than a thousand in ALL the surrounding counties, including Hillsborough or something like that, which is supposed to be mad right-wing. So go ahead and blame it only political envy __________________ BOTH the democratic and republican commitees agreed on using that ballot..o well.__________________ Quote:
Which doesn't change the fact that people were (maybe) casting votes for someone other than who they wanted to vote for. That, or we have a large-ish colony of geriatric skinheads running around in southern Florida... Regardless, if I was a candidate, I'd much rather win fairly, instead of hoping for a procedural mistake...but then again, if I'd blown a hundred mill on a campaign, I guess I'd rather just win! __________________ In Palm Beach County, there were around 19,000 votes that were thrown out because they were punched twice - and most of those were punched for Gore AND Buchanan. If you look at LA County, there were only about 5,000 votes thrown out for double punching (If I remember correctly), and there were MANY more people voting in LA County . . . coincidence?? Further, in Palm Beach County, only about 3,000 votes were thrown out for the same reason in the Senatorial election - so it would seem that there WAS something a bit more confusing about the Presidential ballot in Palm Beach County.__________________ I agree completely. Keep in mind, many of these people were old and can't see very well. There's no way that 19,000 people, mostly minorities, votes for Buchanan.__________________ Year 2000: ~3400 votes for Buchanan in that district with new ballotYear 1996: ~2700 votes for Buchanan in that district with original ballot __________________ Quote:
I've never seen the 2700 vote number, but I won't argue it, although I would like to see the source if you've got it. However, my suspicion would be that Buchanan had more support in 1996 than he did this year. He seems to have less support in the vast majority of places around the country, why would he have increased support in Palm Beach County this year - especially since he didn't even visit Palm Beach County once during the entire campaign? Further, Buchanan himself has said that he believes he received votes that he shouldn't have. This is quoted from the CNN website "My guess is, I probably got some votes down there that really did not belong to me and I do not feel well about that. I don't want to take any votes that do not belong to me." Would Buchanan admit that and open the door to having a Democrat win if he didn't really believe it? __________________ I saw that about the double punching..why did they think they could punch it twice and still be counted? where is the logic? no matter WHICH side is complaining the worst-it still doesn't explain the fact that these people VOTED. If they were so confused (and old as yes we know that some of them are) why the hell didnt they just say..HEY I CANT SEE WHERE I AM SUPPOSED TO punch out?..my gosh, these older folks are the ones who went to wars and built this country up-they must have SOME modecum of common sense left..well at least ENOUGH to ask about such things if there was any doubt. my gosh I wonder how much the US gov is going to have to spend to get this all sorted out.__________________ Quote:
Last I heard, Al was behind by less than 1000. Assuming nothing has changed (a big if), those 700 votes are pretty important! And oblong, while I don't like making excuses for old people, you can see poorly and make a mistake. If they knew they were making a mistake, wouldn't they have said something? As for common sense, I think we see how little common sense a lot of people have on a daily basis. I commend you for having more. __________________ When you get to be 70 and living in Del Boca Vista, e-mail us and tell us if you still have that sharp wit and cat like relexes.__________________ Quote:
"Where'd you get the Cadillac, Morty?" __________________ I personaly don't want someone who can't figure out how to punch one hole in a piece of paper to vote. I feel safer knowing they are being ignored.Besides the ballot was approved by the Democrats and Republicans. If they didn't like it they should have said something before the election. __________________ As much as I don't really want to see Bush win... and as much as I'd like those votes to swing Gore's way.. I think they have to stand as counted, without a revote or adjustment.I can see how someone could perhaps vote incorrectly on that ballot... it wasn't perfectly clear which hole to punch. But it was clear enough. It was not a misprint. It was not a rigged ballot. I hate the fact that it'll give Bush the presidency, but frankly, those people should have been paying closer attention - and if they weren't sure, they should have asked for help. Voting is a responsibility - not something you whip through so you can hit the bar. And perhaps this is the price we pay for not taking it seriously enough. I can sympathize with the people who voted wrong - but it doesn't change the fact that they voted wrong due to their own errors. Next time they'll pay attention, you can bet on that! They get four years of Bush as punishment, and the whole country will remind them of that. (Except for Bush voters who will thank them... which might be worse punishment!). Jase __________________ CNN is where the 2700/3400 was reported. BTW, the reform party in Orlando grew 110% from 1996 to 2000, for the other areas of Florida where it was compared, the reform party grew 38% on average. So, the growth actually does make good sense. You know who I'd hate to be right now? I'd hate to be the democrat who designed the Orlando ballot. Bummer, eh? __________________ Was watching CBS earlierand they declared Gore a winner and retracted it 15 min laternow they are talking bout some 1% 3 precint bull**** in west plam beach or whatever bunch of stupidity why dont they get their facts straight b4 they say stupid **** __________________ Quote:
I don't know. If you know what you're looking at, I'm sure it probably didn't seem like a problem. This kind of thing isn't restricted to politics. You see products all the time that are crystal clear to some customers, clear as mud to others. __________________ Democrats are a bunch of whiners trying to steal the election. Their going to drag this **** out for weeks. SOB'S!__________________ Quote:
I've been all over CNN's site, cant find this info. Would you grace us with a link? __________________ Point 1: The ballot was posted in the newspaper ahead of time so voters could get their questions out of the way.Point 2. The ballot was not only approved by the democrats, IT WAS DESIGNED by a democrat. Personally, I don't think people who are too dumb to operate a card and a hole puncher should be voting in the first place, and the fact that they were trying to vote for gore or buchanon speaks clearly of that fact... __________________ Television (which has been on like 35 of the last 48 hours). Man, my eyes are like little television tubes now.__________________ Watching CNN just now...apparently the ballot might not even be LEGAL! This is just the news guys talking so take it with a grain of salt. Apparently, there is a statute that REQUIRES the top 2 candidates to be first and ALL candidates to be listed on the LEFT and the vote box on the right. If indeed this statute is read correctly, it will be a moot point as to whether the ballot was confusing or whether it was approved by Dems or not...it was plain illegal.I like the solution CNN analysts offerred. If indeed the ballot is illegal, the counties affected should have a Re-Vote with ONLY the people who voted originally. This would prevent all the Democrats who were too lazy to vote in the first place from affecting the outcome. Also they (CNN) says the notion of "one chance, one vote" is completely wrong. What is important is the will of the people. In any event, I hope Bush wins convincingly. __________________ Quote:
hmmm........ why do i get the feeling that you are a republician ??? which explains the reason that you are so quick to overgeneralize and make such a blanket statement against everyone who isnt in your group i personally am not a republician but i do not have anything against them they just do ont support my ideals but i still respect thiers beliefs and their right to fair and accurate representation __________________ hahaha...republican-noIt's worse...I'm a catholic. The reason why I'm so pissed at the democrats is that this election, they've whined, bitched, moaned, and cheated the system to gain political power. This is EXACTLY what the founding fathers wanted to avoid. They saw what had happened in the parliament in England, and they wanted to Outlaw polictical parties. But the idea was challenged that it was against freedom to assemble, (which is what they were fighting for) so they permitted political parties. Now look what has happened? The only way to gain a spot in politics is to have a truckload of money and kiss someone's ass like it's ice cream. Is this "fair and accurate representation?" __________________ Quote:
__________________ "Democrats are a bunch of whiners trying to steal the election. Their going to drag this **** out for weeks. SOB'S!"When your candidate wins the popular vote, THEN you can whine about the opposition trying to "steal the election". Until then neither of these bozos is clearly entitled to it. Bush may win the electoral college... but since he got fewer votes, you could technically say HE stole the election. Regardless, whoever wins the electoral college IS the president. I won't argue that, even if (and it most likely will be) it's Bush. But with one winning the popular, and one winning the electoral, any whining by either side is pretty well understandable. Jase __________________ the media just can't stand eating crow and R hyping this way up. not that florida isn't well gnown for its 'issues' with ballots and polling irregularities. They could go on for months 'discovering' ballots down there, and that is why it will go to the House of Representatives__________________ well i do agree that the democrats in the spotlightthe few that are there are whiners but you still can not make a blanket statement like that it the same as saying taht republicans are all klansmen as someone stated b4 both are completly inncorrect you cannot overgeneralize like that about nythnign __________________ Quote:
Both candidates campaigned knowing full well which states they wanted. How many visits did either candidate make to Montana. As long as the candidates "whine and dine" the big city states and blow off the small states, the electoral college will remain in effect. You can see this by the distribution of Gore/Bush supporters. Didn't it seem odd that Gore "lit up" the East coast like a Roman candle with Cali sticking out like a sore thumb. Bush all over the center of the country. Simply put, Bush appealed to more rural people, Gore appealed to more inner city people. If you look at their campaign stops and their speeches it all makes sense. Personally I think the electoral college is stupid. It encourages candidates to visit a state "as many times as necessary to win". What kind of public service is that? Mavi forum |
