do any of you know which versions of windows, the win 200 0upgrade can build upon? i'm particularly curious about the relationship to windows 95, 98, and NT 3.5. __________________ If you are referring to Windows 2000, it is based upon the NT architecture. Therefore, you cannot upgrade to Windows 2000 from Windows 95/98. However, if you are referring to Windows Millennium Edition, you can upgrade to WindowsMe from Windows 98. Another option is partitioning your hard drive or installing a second hard drive on which to install Windows 2000. You must install Win2k on a system already running Win98 and not vice versa because of the booting nature of the operating systems.__________________ well...i know all about the architecture and histories of WinME and Win2K, but I was really hoping that someone could tell me which OSes could be upgraded with the new Win2K boxes. I know that it is built on Windows NT technology, but the old boxes used to say "upgradeable from Win 95, Win 98, and Win NT 4.0", while the new ones only say "For systems with or without Windows" which is totally odd for an upgrade...but oh well... DAMN!ProMinx __________________ Win2k pro or advanced server will install over NT or 98/95, pop the cd in and you are off... It will automatically do FAT 32 to anything and will offer NTFS, hence nt file sys... Anyway I upgraded over NT4 and 2 98's I actually had difficulty doing a clean install MS advised me to use 98... I have not tested NT 4- or 98fe- I also do know ME will upgrade.Hope that helps PRO... er shouldn't this be in Software? __________________ Sorry to burst ur bubble but, Win2k comes in 3 flavors all full or upgrade versions... Clean install is MORE difficult than upgrading... Read on microsoft.com__________________ Sorry to flame but:LINUX... Solaris... I just love command line, being able to hand edit config files to make stuff work that really shouldn't. To be fair, Windows 2000 isnt't that bad.... Lots of new cool services compared to NT 4. __________________ {doesn't worry about it since he runs Win98, WinMe, NT4.0 Win2000, Linux and Solaris at home} Installing win2000 clean is easy as hell. __________________ If you're trying to save data and do an upgrade over the top of W9X it will work, however I wouldn't advise it unless it was absolutely necessary. If you had data to preserve, though it may be best to:Upgrade over the top. Import your data.. Move to another partition or better yet, a different drive. and then do a clean install on cleanly formatted disk, then bring in your data. Pain in the ass, but best way to do it. Insures a clean O/S without data loss. I know there are easier ways, but this is the best for data preservation. At microsoft I install OS's onto the DataCenter servers and we DO NOT install over the top of old OS's if it can be prevented. (NT4 to W2k isn't as bad as over a 9X OS however, pretty smooth. Of course we don't deal with much/any W9x stuff). If dual boot is in your future, Install W2k first and then add in W98 on a diffent partition.(once again a different drive would be better).
