yeah, how involve will it be? i have a year of experience doing ASP in a 3-tier architechture(from my previous job) if this project does not require my TOTAL committment, i wouldn't mind getting my hands wet again or just to provide some advice.

all this would be free of course! after all, we're all here for something free... right?

What? Free? You're kidding, right?

I haven't even figured out all the details yet. I was thinking about starting a rewards program. *laugh* I've got the webservers, the bandwidth, etc.

The more pressing thing was a database driven coupon code system, but I may have that part worked out already.

just out of curiosity, what kind of database are you running this off of?

Hey maggie, the database sounds like something I have been planning to get around to doing. I am interested in hearing more about your plans, so if you dont mind, send me an email. kdevil69@yahoo.com

Well, the biggest problem I'm running into is the logistics of how a rewards program works. If someone makes a purchase, you are able to tell in linkshare or the other reporting agencies, but how does one connect that particular sale to who actually clicked through and made the purchase to give the point credit?

And how else could I award points in a manner that wouldn't allow cheating? For example, I'd like for the member to generate points through page views or message board posts, but someone could easily cheat.

As far as the coupon code database driven asp, I may have that one taken care of already, but this rewards thing is something I am interested in looking at. I could do it like freeride, assigning points for clickthroughs, but I really don't see how that benefits the rewards program if a certain percentage doesn't purchase. And I know from hanging out with the reward program users that most just want the points and the free GC's and don't want to buy. If that's the case, I would want the page views within the site so advertising revenue could be generated.

Hmmm.... I think i have a lot more studying to do. I just don't understand how one can link a clickthrough to a merchant with the sale and know who made it if there are very many people visiting that site at the time.

Right now, I'm offering $2 Flooz bonus to those signing up at Infomarkets on my site, BUT infomarkets is one of those that send you the username of who signs up so you can reward accordingly. If I stick to only those types, it would be VERY limiting. I know the tracking of visitors and the points tracking wouldn't be difficult, it's just the rewards themsevles.

I've rambled enough.

Well I don't know ASP (wanna learn though) but i have worked with Ora_Perl and other mods of perl. and one way that i can think of is to keep a db of the user via either username or by ip and have everypage send a time stamp to the db for recording; When purchases are made and the ip match, that means they most likely made the purchase through click through or at least has been through your site. I am not sure if the idea helps, good luck on your site

Okay Maggie, I've heard you refer to your site a lot but I've never seen a link to it or even an address. I understand why, out of respect to Apex you do not post it here. However, I would like to request the address so I may venture over there and add you to my favorites. Please e-mail me the link, if you wouldn't mind. tefelt@netzero.net

Thanks,

Tim

Clueless,

Thanks for replying! That's the problem, the reporting agencies don't report usernames or IP addresses back to me, just session IDs from their end and timestamps. Since these times are being reported from each individual merchant (could be one of hundreds) if the times were off by even a couple of seconds, it may be hard to tell who placed the order if I am rewarding people for clicking through and several people were doing it around the same time. (Which is very possible, just look at Freeride.) *sigh* I know there has to be a way of doing it that I am not seeing.

Tim, I emailed you the url.

Maggie
