Ya im not a NT tech! I want to be one. I am lowly 2nd level tech support for USB peripherals. I hate this town, I hate all the stupid temp agencies that nickel and dime your ass, I hate it! I am so sick of getting in a suit to have a 2 hour berating of how unqualified I am. Wait till next time, I will be more confident and not so ass kissing next time. I think thats the problem, they all think im a push over in these interviews. __________________ Suckage for me I am only an intern right now, but oh well, intern = you can screw up and not get in trouble But man I am testing software... UGGHH how borrrrrrrrrrrring, jeez regressing bugs and things like that has to be one of the most boring jobs there is. I would do something else but they pay well $775 a week, and I have to show up at work at 10, and usually leave be 5 or 6, so not bad with an hour lunch. What I want to get is my A++ certification (I think? whatever the hardware one is) cause I do all sorts of setup here so I already know all that crap, might as well get certified. __________________ certifications dont mean squat. not that i'm not pursuing evr certification out there just to put on my resume and look good, but it's all about real life experience and being able to show somenone that you possess the skills they need. i walked into my engineering job with no engineering background becasue of my knowledge of communications equip. and a positive attitude.__________________ OK, let me start by saying that I have been on 4 interviews for NT admin, Junior System Admin, and even Help Desk. I am clean cut guy with a great personality, witty, bright, good sense of humor, hell, I even have Bacheolors Degree. I am male and I am 27. I currently am 2nd Level Phone support for a blue chip company, supporting peripherals, connectivity, networking issues. printers, scanners-etc. I have MCSE/MCP/A+/Network+. Over 4 years experience. now to my rant-Places are calling me for NT admin etc, etc- I have light admin expereince and alot of hardware installation exp, OS installs, change a hd out here, or a cd rom there , build a PC there, change a motherboard here or fix one there. Have a home network, completed my exams etc. THESE FRIEKEN people are calling for what I am thinking would be "deskside support" positions and I get to these interviews and they are telling me " oh you dont have experience with 7206 router, configuring, installing etc"?? WebTrends??" Uhm lets see, can u use this or that?? This guy took me on a tour of his facility and showed me a rack of servers, switches, routers, raid arrays, I mean this was a killer set-up. It was an ISP company in my area. He was like, you would need to know how to troubleshoot this whole room and rack. What a total dick. It says no where on my resume that I have "high end" level of experience so he called it- So then why the hell would he call me in for an interview?? I wish he threw my resume in the garbage, no he didnt, this guy called me in and yanked me around his company like a dog on a chain and basically told me how unqualified I was and that he had just fired an MCSE because the guy had no idea wtf he was doing" ( this guy swore through the whole interview, not to mention he was getting bombarded with phone calls the whole time. (he was the President and CEO)I might add. Anyways, He then asked my what kind of money I was looking for, and I was like well, currently i make 17 bucks an hour so.... Now mind you folks that is like 35k a year. He goes, well would you come in for 30? I was like no I am sorry I cant do that. He then said, we would have to send you to SQL classes, cause i need someone that knows SQL.This guy was a total scheister! Well, I know nothing about SQL. so then he is like how well you do you tink you know NT? I am like, uhmm well pretty well, i can install it, repair it, network it etc. He then is like ok, well how well you do know CISCO equipment? This guy was a total dick, here i am thinking I am going into some call center or something thinking they need and "admin" for admin duties and desktop support etc and this guy expects me to know his racks of servers, apc's in and out, he wanted UNIX, CISCO-everything. NOT CERTS EITHER!! He wanted someone to know this stuff in and out. Now folks, I am not complaining, I am just saying-ON MY RESUME IT SAYS NO WHERE that i know how to configure and install a 7206 switch and router and configure it for usein a WAN environment and that my knowledge and experience can make or break this company. In fact, on my resume, I mention that i have LAN expereince not WAN experince. I have no WAN experience!!! SO WHY THE HELL would even waste my time!!! I hate this guy.. ok well I feel better now, I just hate people that interview me and they try and belittle you and cut you down throughout the interview, its such a blow to your confidence, especially feeling really good about your certs and thinking in your head someday i'll get in, someone will give me a shot, somewhere. These kind of interviews, really dim the light at the end of the tunnel for people like me. I hope that guy gets it back in spades for what he did to me yesterday. Oh one more thing, he goes- "see the light on my phone right here, well if I took those servers down, every light on this phone would be lit up with people complaining, and you need to know how to fix it. And then on and on, with they are offering great stock and how they are going Public etc- I walked ou of there all pissed off and stuff at myself for not knowing what he needed me to know, but you know what?? Now that I think of it, I dont want that job, this guy is a tyrant and I am not the right fit for that job anyways. I understand that MCSE, systems admins and stuf are supposed to be glorified problem solvers but this guy just took to the next level. F-him and his company. I feel much better now. Hope this thread kicks with people like me, I would feel better to know that other people are out there like myself. -skyjuice __________________ Damn. Ya I haven't gotten my MSCE yet, just a lowly MCP right now, too lazy to finish the other tests but oh well. But ya when people see that MSCE they just assume you know everything about networking, blah just having my MCP my boss expects me to do all sorts of crap. Oh well I don't mind as long as they still pay me well.__________________ You only make 35K as an NT tech in the NY area? You're getting way under paid. But keep the spirit up. I had an interview with a bank recently. When I walked into the room, they said, sorry you're a bit under qualified for this position. Now I'm not as patient as you so I ripped the guy off about why he even called me in. So he eventually asked me the stupid questions he had on MS Exchange. And to his surprise, I answered them. And than I decided to drop a few questions on him. And he was like 'duhhhh'. In the end he asked me to go for a 2nd interview with another guy, and I said just screw it. Some people are just jerks. But seriously, you're under paid. __________________ how acceptable are certificates from www.brainbench.com ??? hehe__________________ quote: Haha that thing is lame. I passed! __________________ Join the dark side, skyjuice. Build a website and work for yourself... __________________ Hi skyjuice,Wow, you have MCSE, MCP, A+, and Network+ certifications. I am very impressed with what you have accomplished. I have a short term goal of becoming Sun Java Certified. I always feel things happen for a reason. Just think, if you did not see the interviewer's true colors and you decided to take the position, you would have been miserable. I have interviewed and worked for several large and small companies, and this is what I have learned from my experience: During the interview process, the large companies (i.e., AC, PwhC) really do not care how technical you are. They are looking for someone who projects a professional image and can communicate well (i.e., work with clients, present ideas effectively). As long as you can look the part and B.S., then you are a shoe in. The small companies do care and want to know your technical experience. They expect a lot from you, and they usually pay less than the large companies. There are advantages of working for a small company. If you have a positive attitude and confidence going into the interview, then you will definitely get an offer. You may even have several offers to choose from. __________________ Dude, I hear your pain!!! Like I said in previous posts, I looked for over 1 year for a position as an NT admin. Same story: "what exp. do you have doing admin?". I finally got to the point where I would just lose it and say "hey, look! did you read my cover letter? The part where it says I don't have any admin experience and am seeking an entry level postion as one?" I got to the point of thinking maybe they WANT me to lie to them and bull$hit them. Very very very frustrating. They expect you to drop everything and come in for the interview just so they can put a face to the resume and file it away for future use. Trolling for resumes. (expect to be getting phone calls in about 8 months!!) A LOT of companies DEMAND a candidate with their SPECIFIC h/w s/w experience and then pay them $hit for it. I was in the process of starting my own company before I got this last gig (call from the governer at the last minute). I still may go back to the buisness, cuz thats the only way I think I'm going to be making any big bucks. (heres a thought for you.... home networking installation and setup and support ... not "big iron", but there is going to be a TREMENDOUS growth opportunity for the early companies here...)Anyway, don't loose the faith. Try to .. forgive the term... network .. and make friends and influence people with the jobs that can DO something for you. Maybe go to the MS technet meetings, Backoffice users groups, volunteering leads to jobs. I have totally lost ALL faith in getting jobs thru the paper/monster etc... 80% (I think I heard one time) of all jobs are never advertised, they are filled internally or through friends/word of mouth etc... keep your ear to the ground, bug the hell out of people and get a job for christ sakes!! BTW, Dont be impressed by a couple of racks of servers. Thats ****. And you know what, a computer is a freaking computer. "high-end"? I've been tweeking on a couple of "high end" compaq 8500's running the newest 700MHZ procS, dude, its still just a computer. It's got ram, its got a floppy drive, its got cables, its got a power cord. If something breaks, you replace it. Whats the difference? $60,000 or so, but it's still just a computer. BTW, you are underpaid. MCP magazine salary survey indicates you should be making around 55,000 or more. (you do subscribe to that right?) __________________ Apex-Thanks for the thought Phlick, It was 15 bucks so i canned it. (mag)Maybe I will do it though now. Anyways, I quit my lowly Tech Support this week out of disgust and fear that if I stayed there any longer I would be become what they call a "lifer" someone who settles for that crappy position making 17-19 bucks an hour (dude screw that). I want at least 24 dollars an hour. (although i would take 20 to start-heheh.. ) So Phlick, someone actually gave you a shot at the beginning? Thats what I need. As far as the racks, ya they are intimidating but you are right. They are still the same thing ( a computer). just real high end- Thanks for the pep-talk phlick-Ill keep you posted- __________________ Dude, that sucks.I've been trying to get any sort of tech job. But no one will hire me. ------------------ The Minister of Sinister www.revil.com __________________ I know what you guys mean. I went to a temp agency looking for an electronics job. Told them all of my expirence, dvd player mods, building amplifiers, triplite mods, ect. They were like "oh yeah we have a great job for you" The next day I find myself on an assembly line at Epson plugging 3 wires into a power supply before sliding it down to the next person. Talk about mind numbing. I have better ways to spend my summer.------------------ <*{{{{<( ßÅĞfϧH )>}}}}*> __________________ Geez, i was hoping to find an intern job this summer. Started looking a week afterschool got out, mid may. I got reallyluckyin the beginning, a friend worked at morgan stanly dean witter. He needed three ppl, intern programmers, perfectfor me. Isubmited my resume that night but there wereproblems with the attachment. By the time he finally got it half a week passed. My other friend calls me up and tells me that it kinda sux,(this is his GF that alsoworks at MSDW) So i stayup all night fixing it up, resubmitted it and he says its ok and gives it to hismanager, twodays later, he's like "Sorry". So i looked and i looked, everyone wants fulltime it seems. Temp agencies arent much help, they just give you a false sense of hope and online places arent super either. I'm hoping to prep myself better next time, and start doing all of this while i'm in school. Once school is out, its a war.------------------ ~Grizy Great, so how much is shipping? __________________ Hey Sky Juice where do you live? East coast or west coast__________________ i say lie your butt off in the interview. dont go too overboard as far as what you know how to do, but if you know everything about servers tell them you're certified even if you're not. once you get your foot in the door it's going to be hard for them to let you go. i always lie at interviews, especially when it comes to personal stuff and what experiences have you had that taught you this or that. telling the truth is stupid, you have to make up something that sounds really impressive.__________________ att, if I hired someone who claimed MCSE status and I later asked for their MCP ID# and they couldn't produce it, they would be out the door so fast their head would spin. Doesn't matter how good they are or how much they know - out they would go.Do not lie in an interview about things like certifications, college degrees, years of experience, etc. These things are very easy to verify, and if you get caught in a lie, that's it. End of interview (or end of job, if they hired you based on those credentials). If you want to spice up your personal life & talk about how you were on tour with the Rolling Stones for a year, fine. Just don't lie about job qualifications - it'll make your life and your employer's life miserable if you can't do what you claimed you could. __________________ MSVENTRE-east coast- why bro?? __________________ Sky.....When you do find a place... and I know it won't be a position like this one.. but it will bring a smile to your face... http://members.iinet.net.au/~bofh/index.html I found it today at work when I was doing a search for call center humor.. concidering I am 2nd level for a software..
